Anyone here got a good opinion of a particular bottle of red or white??

Just started getting into buying a bit of the stuff and wondered if anyone has a good recommendation?

A fair bit depends on your budget but without spending a fortune try reds like a Taylors Shiraz,WirraWirra Church Block and Rouge Homme.

I guess they would be pretty popular Mags,and for a reason too.Good drinking at a reasonable price.

I like Cab Sav's or blends and currently am into cleanskins. However, I love Church Block and School Block too.

you should also try BLEASDALE red wines from Langhorne Creek. Especially the Mulberry tree Cab Sav

Bremerton wines also from langhorne creek have some terrific reds. Paracombe wines from the northern adelaide hills are far superior than New Zealand alternatives when it comes to whites such as sauvignon blanc and pinot gris. But after working in retail liquour for ten years now, i could list hundreds of good choices. Generally beware of wineries that have been bought out by large companies like fosters because the quality will drop off inevitably.

If you're into shiraz, have found a nice one in Vic called the Rufus Stone Heathcote Shiraz... got given a freebie of it from work but usually goes for around $18-$25 a bottle and is extremely good value

I'd lick the Sturt Highway clean all the way to Mildura for a 1992 Trentham Estate Merlot !

Absolutely, that Rufus stone is a ripper, but here in Adelaide we are really parochial, so victorian wines can be difficult to sell. I know a certain wine shop in Adelaide with the Rufus stone on special for $14.99 at the moment

That's a decent price... Picked up a bottle from Dan Murphy's here in Melbourne the other week for $15.50 but now up to the $19 mark!!

Bit of advice. Try anything you can get your hands on. You'll come to know which regions
or wines you enjoy soon enough.

If I go out of my way to buy a label(s) I'll stick with the one's I love. For Shiraz Skillogalee (Clare) and Balnaves (Coonawarra). I enjoy my Pinot from Nepenthe (Adelaide Hills) & Cloudy Bay (New Zealand). I will drink anything from Rockfords (Barossa).

Don't really get into other red varieties so much, but will generally drink whatever is around or available on the menu. As for White's will quaff anything really, not a huge conasuire, but will go out of my way for a nice glass of Montadam Chardonnay.

Right now Im enjoying a glass of 1998 Bin 444 Cab Sav.

I've got a Coonawarra '98 Shiraz that I've had for years. Would it still be alright to drink? I don't know much about wine except that I like to drink lots of it.

If you have kept it well, it should be very nice.

For reasonably priced quaffing wine, can't go past these:

Wirra Wirra Church Block (cab sav - shiraz - merlot blend, IIRC)
Hardy's Oomoo Shiraz
Ingoldby Cab Sav

I have half a case of Andrew Garrett reserve shiraz put away for special occasions.

Im not a wine drinker at all, but my wife highly recommends Brown Brothers Dolcetto & Syrah. She drinks it chilled, by the case load !!!

She also is keen on Geesans (spelling?) Sauv Blanc - think its a New Zealand wine ???

I don't drink red. Cant stand the stuff.

However, I do happen to have a bottle of 1996 St Hallets Old Block which was given to me as a thankyou present in my first year at PNU.

Any bidders?

As for whites, I prefer cellar only stuff, I find it better quality. The Chardys and Sav Blancs from Langmeil, Bethany, Stonehaven and Bests (Grampians) are my picks.
