A Royal Australian Mint spokesman said, "We have plans to cut costs by abolishing everything but the $50 note. Supermarkets have assured us this will cause no inconvenience."
[I still pay by credit card - so long as there is no levy - to pay say $23.93 instead of it being rounded up to $23.95. ]

This is a backward step I will miss the five sent piece big time. Nothing beats paying for a pizza with five cent pieces. My kids love them they have saved up a fair few and most of the time they pick them up off the street and they put them into their money box.

Smiths Snack Machines still accept them if you want to get rid of them!

As do some Coke machines.
