Does anyone here use a universal remote to replace a remote control they have lost or is broken? What are they like? Do they actually work like they say they do? I've "misplaced" 2 remotes and am wondering if they are a suitable replacement.

I got one a few years back thinking it would stop the coffee table being littered with the things but I got so sick of constantly having to switch it from TV to VCR etc.
You want to change the volume on the TV and nothing happens cos you forgot you last used it for the VCR so you hit the button to change it then you want to change channels on the set top box and you have to remember to change mode again then you want to set the VCR and nothing happens and round you go again...probably just me but I went back to using seperate remotes.
Regards

I use a Logitech Harmony 525 and it is very good. Frequently sold by Officeworks and Dick Smith for under $100. I paid $190 for mine and I think it a bargain even at that price.
Quite easy to setup via the web interface. Customizable buttons etc. Mine runs 6 devices at present,TV,DVD,VCR,AV receiver,Media Player,Foxtel.
It is also something of a peacemaker. Previously if my Missus wanted to watch a DVD i would have to juggle the remotes and set it up for her,if I was out she waited till I got home, now she presses one button to watch a DVD and it will switch on the TV,DVD and Amp and select all the right inputs/outputs etc.
I cannot recommend it enough.

2nd the Logitech Harmony 525 ... you should be able to get one for well under $100 and have seen them at Dick Smith for $77 on special.
They can be a bit fiddly to setup but work great once you do and the only other thing is that they chew through batteries fairly regularly, but not a problem if you use rechargables.
