*Twilight Zone music* .. I was actually going to start a thread on this the other day.

Whilst I'm a suffer, Im probably fortunate that it's only once a year and very small and hideable.

For me I heat the needle up straight away and hack it up, then metho or sovirax, usually gone in 3 days.

I'm lucky not to have ever caught herpes.
I feel your pain though.

There have been some reports that exposure to the vaccines for other variants of the Herpes virus - Chicken Pox and Small Pox - reduced the incidence of cold sores in future, after an initial flare up.
My own problems with cold sores diminished after I was exposed to Chicken Pox and had a dose of the CSL produced antibody globulin.
Zovirax or Stoxil applied early is the conventional approach.

Had chicken pox twice (I'm lucky like that) and still get the occasional cold sore every few years.
As kids my late mothers remedy (a staff nurse) was always to dab it with some perfume on a bit of cotton wool...probably similar effect to the metho in that the spirit/alcohol content helps dry it out but slightly less disgusting taste for kids.

These days I just let it run it's course and try to make a concious effort to keep it as dry as possible by not licking my lips etc. Rather dubious about the shop bought remedies but if that works for you then go for it...had a look at Sovirax on the shelf not so long back and noticed that it's 'price per litre' was about £7500...at least someone's doing nicely from it ;)

Regards
JAS

The company that makes the antiviral Zovirax [marketed with a Z in Oz] used to make Stoxil.
Stoxil was no longer under patent and its price was down, so they sold it to a minor company and brought out the new product.
The old one, which was as effective and much cheaper, has since disappeared from the market.
[I suspect partly because the mark up on the cheap product was also less attractive to retail Pharmacy chains so they didn't stock it.]

Betatidine has always worked for me. as soon as i fill the blister coming up the betadine comes out.. works to dry it up and clear the infection (I think)... if got early can be gone in 3-4days rather than a week or more

A dollop of vegemite on it before you go to bed dries it up in no time.

I personally don't get cold sores, but I hear lying on your back and then urinating on your face clears cold sores right up!

That's meant to be good for stye's I heard, along with rubbing someones ring on it, I don't know which one I'd prefer, perhaps the eye irritation is tolerable.
