South Road Tunnel - Grange Rd to Port Rd?

With the Anzac Highway Underpass now reaching handover stage, how come no work has begun on the further upgrade, of South Rd that was announced at the same time being the Tunnel from Grange Rd to Port Rd and under the Railway line? Has it been scrapped like the new prision project at Murray Bridge? :?

Because it took about 30 years to go from the initial overpass at Cross Rd to that underpass, the next one will happen in another 30 years. It'll be a straight through trip in about 450 years time. Can't wait.

might be a money thing with current situations around the world. Also might find it hard for a tender aswell.
Brisbanes 4km Clem7 tunnel tho up here opens in january next year. But $4.20 for the toll to use it tho :(

I don't think so. Think it has been leapfrogged by the South road tram over pass which if Mike Rann had any brains would have been incorporated into the underpass project not tacked on as an after thought :roll:


Plus the desalination plant looks to be far more important as we don't actually need it but we will build it anyway :? :roll:

Melbourne's tunnels tend to worrying water leaks - that may be less of a problem in Adelaide's drier west..
I've driven around the area recently and I wonder if the cost could be justified for the busy 30 minutes at each end of the working day.
Adelaide is just so easy to drive around, compared to Melbourne...

Ultimatlye Psyber it is all about the Master Plan of Adelaide to have a non stop North - South Freeway which was originally intended in 1969.

The land for that project was largely sold off and developed, resultantly the only way to do it is to fix the existing corridor. The problem that I see is that the original freeway was supposed to be 3-4 lanes minimum and although you can remove the traffic lights, how can you get 3-4 lanes plus bike lanes all the way down through Edwardstown?

I know that 2 Government planners had a meeting with my boss a month or two ago about the impact putting an overpass over Cormack Rd and the freight railway line on South Rd and also an overpass over Grand Junction Rd on South Rd, will have on the business I work at, so they might be the next two projects the Government is looking at starting.

Im filthy on that Prison project being canned. I spent hours with a member of the Dept of Correctional Services getting a product my company make specified for the job, only to hear the project is doomed before it began.

Would have got me my new car that one job.... :evil:

Off topic South road closed on the weekend between Anazac Highrway and the Tram line i think so they can start on the tram overpass

How many people travel that route or will in future?
What links do people in, say, Noarlunga have with those at the Port or Elizabeth?
Do people drive from one end to work in the other?
Does anyone expect manufactured goods from the south to be shipped from the Port?

I ask these questions seriously because, although I grew up in the inner west, [and for about 8 months lived at West Lakes later in life] I have lived most of my adult life on the eastern side, making only brief forays to Mile End, Keswick, or Marleston, on specific business. [And occasionally had lunch with friends in Lipson St.]

We live near there. It was bad enough with one major South Road project going on messing with the traffic. If they had done the overpass at the same time it would have been chaos!

As far as the residents were aware, the tram overpass was always happenning straight after the underpass. Not sure it's an afterthought? They handed out flyers on how the overpass will look and it's actually an enclosed bridge with a tram stop on top. Looks really good actually. Getting that tram-line off South Road will make a huge difference to traffic flows.

Credit where it's due to the construction company on the underpass project. Considering what's actually been done, the traffic flows haven't been too bad over the last however long it's been. It's been interesting seeing it all come together.

All the underpass has done is move the traffic jam. Last night just after 4pm it was bumper to bumper from Anzac Highway to Daws Rd.
Wouldnt have made any difference last night if there was a tramline or not.

More would be achieved with less expense if they looked at ways to replace the many traffic lights for pedestrian crossings and side streets on South Rd. And perhaps god forbid actually syncronising or monitoring (well) some lights in Adelaide.

Couldn't agree more wedgie. Surely the boffins out there can come up with a better traffic light management system or mayble we can all hack our way into their old system the italian job style?
