Double Yolkers

Bought a carton of McLaren Vale free range eggs and the first 5 have been double yolkers! I'm doubtful all of those have come out the butt of one super chook so what gives? Would it have something to do with the grain they are feeding their chooks? How unusual is it to get 5 in a row?

I often get eggs from my neighbour who has his own chooks and I reckon 1 or 2 out of each dozen would be double yolkers

we are lucky to get free range eggs free from where my gf works and not only is the substantially bigger but if you get a free range egg and a normal supermarket egg, just have a geeze at the difference of the colour of the yolk.

2 more from the same pack - don't think there's been one that hasn't been a double yolker. What are they feeding them down there?

I have my own 4 Bantams and 1 silkie.the first year that my girls started laying we had a couple of double yokers not to many since.
Must be very rare to get so many in one dozen .
Mine free range all day until I lock them in .Of course being bantams a change of wind will send them broody cue one who has been for a while

Yellow to almost orange yolks .My 21 yo who is fussy once he started eating our eggs(and it was a tussle 4 or so years ago)refused to go back to shop eggs unless their free range .

You do get some chooks that commonly lay double yolkers - presumably a genetic tendency.
One of those uncommon types in a small flock will throw the usual statistical incidence out the window.
We had one in a flock of 4 laying hens once and half the eggs she produced were doubles.
Each hen seems to have a preferred laying box if they have free choice so if you filled a carton directly from her box you'ld get a high percentage.

We did and I cracked one open tonight and...and....just a boring old single one. Talk about a rip-off!
I think a mutant uber-chook must have flown in from Chernobyl for the weekend.
