Not an Aussie flight but when I went to Italy I had my travel iron in my cabin bag (had always been told that electrical goods had to be after Lockerbie so they can be checked) and was told by customs (not the airline) it would be confiscated as it now had to be in the hold baggage (post 9/11). Luckily my mate had her hold bag pulled aside for a spot check and they let me put the iron in that.
Suggest you check either the airport website or pop into a travel agent and ask...they should know for certain.
