Grain harvest 2009

Postby silicone skyline » Mon Nov 16, 2009 10:16 am

Went home to the olds' farm last week at Darke Peak, Eyre Peninsula, while on holidays to help with harvest.

We were reaping wheat, yield averaging about 12 to 14 bags an acre, with an extremely high protein grade (H1).

There is no storage nearby for H1 grain so we're trying to store as much of the high quality stuff on farm as possible using silo bags, something we're trying for the first time this year.

Was wondering how any other SAFooty members' harvests are going?

I'm sure there is at least one member out there (Grain Grower) with something to report.

I have spent the last 5 years heavily involved in the Grain Industry, firstly in a pricing role (the farmers werent huge fans, never are) and then in a Risk Management/Analyst role and it is great news, knowing that quality grain is coming out of the Eyre Peninsula; hopefully they get a half reasonable price. There is a lot of debt there, due to washout and fertiliser issues, but hopefully a good season can begin to turn things in the right direction.

A bit closer to home, i know some farmers in the Northern Mallee aren't overly happy with the current crop, and prices, but unfortunately there is quality grain elsewhere which has had a negative effect on the prices received. I know my father-in-law has began storing grain (Barley) on farm with the hope that the price, over time, takes a turn for the better.

My fingers are crossed that the industry can remain resiliant as I begin a position in the new year where I will be working closely with grain growers in an Agribusiness role.

Yeah, we've already dabbled a bit with Barley, think that might be the last to be harvested given the sheer difference in price from wheat at the moment.
