Had to laugh when I read this. The journos shorthand has made it up on to the web (half way through the article), without being put into proper sentences....

Schools: We need earlier fire warnings

THE last-minute cancellation of classes at 11 schools and preschools today will prompt talks about the need for earlier warning of catastrophic fire danger.

The weather bureau issued today's Catastrophic Fire Danger ratings about 4pm yesterday for the Northwest Pastoral and Flinders districts as the state braces for a return to heatwave conditions.

Education Department deputy chief executive officer Jan Andrews said that the closed schools were forced to contact parents or students last night to inform them to seek alternative arrangements.

"We do appreciate that the closure of schools and preschools is an inconvenience to parents, however, the safety of our children, teachers and staff is our top priority," she said.

Ms Andrews said the department acted as quickly as it could once it received the warnings from the bureau and would endeavour to have school closure information released earlier in the future.

"We will discuss with the bureau the possibility of earlier warnings," she said.

Ms Andrews said the ideal scenario would be to know of an impending catastrophic fire rating three days before it arrived.

The schools and preschools closed today are among 140 across the state that the Country Fire Service's audit found to have an extreme, very high or high fire risk.

The closed Flinders schools are Booleroo Centre District School and Kindergarten, Melrose Primary School and Kindergarten, Orroroo Area School, Port Germein Primary School and Play Centre, Stirling North Primary School and Wirrabara Primary School and Preschool.

Ernabella Anangu School is closed in the Northwest Pastoral district.

The catastrophic ratings mark the first time the highest warning has been issued under the new rating system, implemented following the Royal Commission into the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria earlier this year.

The catastrophic rating predicts that any fire will be uncontrollable, unpredictable and fast moving, with a high likelihood of killing or injuring anyone in its path.

Maximum temperatures across the state will soar today, to 44C in Roxby Downs and 43C in Port Augusta. Strong winds and low humidity in the north will confound the scorching temperatures. Adelaide's forecast has been revised to 39C today.

"Clearly in the long hot summer ahead there will be parts of SA whic are likely to have a forecast of catastrophic fire danger so we are calling on every South Australian to share the responsibility and to make sure their bushfire survival plan is in place"

"In many situations we are not going to meet the community expectations for level of detialed info we know the community want

"We are calling on SA with the advent of this hot, windy weather to make sure they have a bushfire survival plan and think very clearly about their triggers when they should relocate to a safer place."

Mr Ferguson said all farmers should check the Harvest Code of Practice and only reap crops when the weather conditions are appropriate.

People who are vulnerable in the community

when we talk about people having a bushfire survival plan its important we think about parents or disabled, that's other members of the family

We had very significant fires in November 1983 in eastern victoria

While this is unusual I don't think this is unprecedented

"It has certainly dried out more quickly than I've ever seen it before, no doubt about that," he said.

in combination with the fact there is a huge grass fuel load

As a result of that, there is more disruption to the community, particularly when we start shutting down businesses and closing schools we are aware that causes a lot

but if we can get through this fire season without losing a single life then I think those new arrangements would have spoken for themselves

If we have to read the crap in the paper I can't see why someone at the Advertiser can't do it as well before it's printed ... funny, they spend so much on printing technology but it seems that the content is a secondary concern.

Good to see the focus is on pretty colours.
