I'm just preparing to buy a new (to me) car. The Mrs. and I have pretty much norrowed down our selection to either a Ford Territory or a Mitsubishi Outlander. Other options were a Holden Captiva or Toyota Kluger but due to funds (lack of) we have ruled them out.

If anyone has an Outlander or Territory I'd be interested to know what you think of them. My in-laws have a Territory and really rate it and pushing us in that direction but speaking to the guy who we will by buying the car through he really thinks that the Outlander is the way to go.

I've done a bit of research on the Territory but must admit I havn't done a lot of research yet on the Outlander. Any help would be appreciated.

You made the right decision not to get a Captiva. My mate had one and it was the biggest piece of crap. Everything f***** up on it.

I dont really know much about the Outlander, but i have a Territory. Its only the rwd version though. The main reason we bought it was because its a 7 seater, and we have about a hundred kids...

Seriously, we are very happy with it. Had it 12 months now, and bought it second hand (its a 2006 model). It is a touch thirsty on the juice, and im guessing the Outlander would use a fair bit less fuel. My missus drives it everyday, to work and school drops, and she loves it. Has plenty of power, and we have even taken it to Melbourne.
My boss has the turbo version - bullet on wheels ! Mind you, its a $60k car !

We are seriously thinking of trading ours in for a new one (demo probably) in the near future, thats how happy we are with it.

Captiva - I have heard of the fire wall cracking. ( Good choice not to get it )

Terrotory - Bit thirsty but most reports I get are good. ( see above )

Outlander - my brother goes from Mildura > Mt.Gambier > Adelaide every two weeks in his and loves it.

Cheers guys. I know that the Territory is a bit thirsty but the in-laws don't think its as bad as what people say. Being thirsty was the only bad thing I've heard about them until last night when I spoke to my car buying mate who is trying to steer me towards the Outlander. He said that he bought 3 terrritories for a family about a year ago (1 for the parents and 1 each for the kids) and they've had nothing but trouble with them since. He seemed to think that they had a softer body. He promised that I wouldn't be disappointed with the Outlander. This is steering me towards one, but I need to do some research first.

I might head to town in the next few weeks to see if I can test drive one to see for myself. I guess Captiva came into the equation because I'm a holden fan, but there is mixed reports. My mate who has one says he wouldn't get another, yet my boss has one and absolutely loves it. Too hit and miss perhaps.

Check this thread out (page two specifically refers to some poster's comments on the Territory and others).

From what I've read and heard, the Territory's resale is worse, it guzzles petrol around town and repairs are more expensive. The Outlander has some issues with the front wheel drive but I know two people who have them and rave about them.

I'm weighing up the Kluger, but I know people who have the "old" Kluger, circa 2004 who rate it highly. Their resale value is holding which is a good sign if you can afford one.

The Outlander is quite a bit smaller than the Territory though i would think. A mate of mine just bought a CX7, and while its a nice car, its noticably less roomier than my Territory. Not sure whether thats an issue for you though. We needed the space.

I might be wrong, but i would have put the Outlander in the same group as the RAV4 - not in with the Kluger and Territory. The Captiva is kind of in-between. Friends of mine have a new Kluger Grande - great car, but pricey.

What size motor has the Outlander got ?

With the fuel economy issue, i have a 2006 Falcon too and the Territory uses slightly more fuel than that - not a huge amount though. The AWD version uses more fuel than the 2WD too.

Possibly - I think the Tiguan starts at about $37990. Of the bigger vehicles I'd probably go for the Kluger.
However, having had some problems with Aussie, Japanese and Italian cars in my youth, I adopted a policy of buying German designed or built vehicles second hand, and it has generally paid off.

Having looked at them all very recently, on a progressive scale for room in the boot area:

I looked at plenty of other options before we bought Terrtory (new and used), and for what we wanted (a large, reliable, value-for-money car), it was the best option by quite a way. Ours is pretty rare too, being a 7-seater. The extra seats do come in handy though.

Kluger was initially my first choice as I really do rate Toyota's but they might be just a touch out of my price range. Due to some upcoming medical expenses I'm only looking to spend $25,000 cash on a car as I will be needing the rest of my funds to pay for this. I don't want to take out a loan on a car at this point in time.

Space isn't a huge issue yet, as we currently have no kids but we are looking at starting a family and with prams etc we will be needing some space. Particularly as we go on about 4-5 long trips per year as well. My only problem with an Outlander is that I can't think of anyone locally who has one to suss it out.

I wouldn't touch either.

They're absolutely bullet proof with 11 seats & only sips the 180 litres of diesel on board.
Once you fill up, you've got a month to drive around before looking for the best discounted
fuel prices at the various truck stops around Adelaide.

I had well over a tonne and a half of boat behind mine and didn't even know it was there.
Wish I'd kept mine now. They reckon those big 4.2lt diesel engines aren't even 'run in' until
you've done 300,000 klicks.

We did Qld. & Tassie, as well as local use and 'The Beast' (vehicle not wife) never missed a beat.
If the pennies will allow some day, I'd go for one of the new V8 Turbo Diesels.
It's nearly time to think about retiring and hanging a big van off the back of a Troopie
for the obligatory 'All Aussie Trek', prior to taking the long dirt nap.

Agree Felch (BTW, how are you?) and they are also a lot smaller than the current body. Hence we only started looking at them when the new bodied version appeared.

Interesting you say about the 7 seats. The Kluger has a 5 seat version and a 7 seat version which folds into the floorspace. The Nissan (can't recall the model) folded up on the side of the body which took a heap of space away. So you recommend the extra couple of seats?

Back on topic, if you're spending 25k on a used car, then I'd go for the Territory before the Outlander (the older Outlanders are ok but smaller than the Territory), however remember that the Territory is a Falcon on roids. There are a ton of them around, and at the moment you can get great deals with the caryards on them. And if you're starting a family the last thing you want to do is buy a car and then need extra space thereafter. We did, hence now looking for the Kluger.

Im good Gadj, im enjoying the tranquility of not being involved with footy at the moment...always hated this time of the year, the off-season.

The 7 seats are very handy, especially seeing that we have 3 kids. If one of them has a friend tag along, then we have room. The seats are piece of cake to fold up and down too, and dont take up any space when folded down. We looked high and low for a 7 seater Territory, found a few in caryards but were quite pricey. We ended up buying a 2006 TX 2wd, with 60000km on the clock for $22000 from a private seller. It was a steal. Friends are currently looking for a used 7-seater Territory, and are having huge problems.
The 7-seat option is a pretty expensive one on a new Territory, so i think thats why they are hard to come by.

If we had the money, we would have bought a CX9 - definately a better built car than the Ford. I just couldnt justify paying the price for it, especially seeing the money we ended up paying for the Territory.
