Prince William

Apologies in advance to the monarchists but I must say this Royal watching and hysteria has got me stumped.

Why in 2010 do we worship these people? What place does Royalty have in modern society?

I'm sure Willy is a nice bloke and all, but WTF does he actually do and why should we care?

What's the difference between Willy and Paris Hilton?

Maybe I'm just me and I'm turning into a grumpy old man.

One has a vagina, one hasn't. Up to you to work it out.

Prince William is going bald. Paris Hilton is bald downstairs (according to the emails I receive)

There's a similarity.

OK to get this back on track and to stop any dispute about who has the vagina.

I think Royalty does have a part to play in modern society, just not in Australia.

Many European countries have Royalty and they are still held in high esteem, such as Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands etc.

Thailand worship the royal family, and respect them to a very high degree. So much so, that the Thai Baht is the cleanest Asian money around next to the Japanese Yen which also depicts the Imperial family.

Yeah but why do we need to worship a pommie king or queen.

For me it's because no one has come up with a better alternative. It's not really about the monarchy, but what form of government/head of state we substitute them with. That's why I voted against becoming a republic in the last referendum, not because I didn't want a republic but because the systems of govt they were proposing were pretty ordinary.

In the end over history has a head of state determined by genetics (monarchy) rather than one by determined by popular vote really done any better or worse? I would argue on comparison that both forms have had their highs and lows, there's been plenty of peanuts who've ended up in power by both systems.

Regardless, most monarchies are purely ceremonial these days anyway and have little to do with running their respective countries besides providing the occasional boost to moral by way of visits and speeches.

Absolutely spot on.

Having the British Monarch provides brilliant political stability to Aus. While we don't necessarily have to do what the Queen says, the Governor General is Australia's head of state and representative to the Queen.

If we abolished this system and went to a republic, we'd probably follow the US setup where we have a president who is head of state. This opens the door for a nutjob to drag us through endless showers of shit in his personal quest to be remembered along the lines of Bush, Hitler, Stalin, Mao.

No thanks.

While I wouldn't go out of my way to see the Queen or Willy, I'm all for keeping the system as it is.

If it aint broke, don't fix it.

So that's where crime syndicates go to launder their money.
I've never understood this (premdominately) female adoration of the rich and/or famous.
Teenage girls seem like sheep. If some of the blokes they fawn over weren't celebrities,
and they walked past them in the street, these girls wouldn't look at them twice.
Yet decent young blokes who really care for a girl would get dumped in a heart beat if one
of these so-called famous identities gave some women 'the time of day'.
:?
Re William, well I guess you can put his appeal down to the 'princess syndrome' imprinted
in many female's psyche. As for his brother, the sooner we get a reliable paternity test
result on him, the better.
;)
