Mr. Premier.

I work in a Nursing home.

You have forgotten us.

Mr Premier, we that look after the aged, we cannot afford to reside in a nursing home upon retirement.

We don't recieve $80G/year like teachers.

We get more like $30G.

What are your thoughts about us Mr Premier...?

Health Care suffers while Baby Sitters get a massive pay rise.

Please answer before you get back to the important things that happen on your Desk......

Have you been to Reynella East or Salisbury West resently?
A 4 yr degree for baby sitting... I think not!
Just remind me about the Tertiary study required for Aged Care Dogger.
I know plenty of Plumbers, Sparkies & Chippies (4 yr TAFE course NOT Uni) that are making s***loads more than your so called $80K for "baby sitting"

And working in a nursing home (noble as it undoubtedly is) has got precisely what to do with teaching?
Baby sitters? Might have been said with a smiley but that's as absurd as me saying all YOU do is strap old codgers in front of Oprah all day and give them the occasional bowl of Farex.

Dogger, I have a feeling that the biggest budget allocation goes to Health - albeit not necessarily to nursing home workers.

As for teachers, they can never negotiate an agreement, they always have to have a dispute. And yet a lot of teachers have commented that the result announced today is still not satisfactory.

Teachers, Nurses, Firefighters and Police have all had massive pay increases in the last 8 years when compared to other occupational groups. Firefighters just got a quiet 18% given to them.

An issue worthy of further discussion though is the cost of getting in to a nursing home - and then you have to be able to access a bed. If you decide to support an elderly parent, my own council restricts "granny flats" to 60 square metres and they must share one wet area with the main home, yet have a car park provided for them.

Teachers are vastly overpaid.
They get more holidays than any other worker (something like 10-12 weeks a year) and are constanly complaining about their payrate, even though it is constantly going up.
Will they ever be happy?

Unless you are a teacher or personally know a teacher very, very well.
You have no idea how hard and how much work they actually do put in.
People think that teachers only work while the kids are there, and that they have holidays every time the kids do.

They may have these times 'away' from the kids but they're still working.
Lesson planning, marking work, preparing work doesn't just fall out of the sky,
As well as helping that kid that needs that extra help,
And not to mention dealing with some of the kids that society dishes up these days - and parents etc.

Yes there are some teachers who do not put in the 'work' and are therefore overpaid but all occupations have the odd 'lazy' worker.

Being a teacher is hard work.

But then again that's probably in every profession too.

My dad is a high school teacher and I wouldn't want his job for anything. If he's not teaching, he's at home marking, or having to write explanatory reports to the principal because of an irate parent who thinks he marks the children too hard (he's a bloody Maths teacher, the answer to a question can only ever be right or wrong!), plus he's been in the same job at the same school for over 30 years - maybe he likes it, but it'd depress the hell out of me. And when a kid threw an egg at him on Muck-Up Day he had to go on WorkCover for stress.

lots of jobs are hard work and they dont get pay rises. im self emplyed, work anywhere from45 to 70 hours a week and im lucky if i get paid for 30.
yes it was my choice but it was the teachers choice to teach.

every industry has lazy workers but every industry assesses there workers and compensated them accordingly. perhaps its time teachers werent paid a flat rate but a rate determined by how good they actually are

But mate, you are reliant on yourself and your will to make your business work. You can choose to work extra hours to make more profit for your business, or find new ways to do so.
Teachers have to ask to get more pay and look at the battle they go through to do that.

I noted earlier in this thread that firefighters got a pay rise and didn't have to fight for it like the teachers did.

I can fully understand fireys getting a rise. That's a high-risk, dangerous job.
