Can someone shed some light on why the president of Toyota (Mr Toyoda) is facing a US congress?? there has been some issues on toyotas yes in the US but its world wide problems tho?? Why is it that if anyone in the world does something wrong that may effect the US has to face a US congress?? Is he under arrest in the US?? is he in jail ?? dont understand?
Or is the president doing this off his own back??

The Prius have been accelerating on their own ( not Honda ) accord. I think I heard 27 or 28 serious crashes with several deaths have involved the Prius in the US.

i think it also has something to do with the fact that toyota have known about some safety issues in the us cars for some time, but played down the problems and didnt do enough about them until it all came to a head recently. and as booney has stated, the problems are believed to have contributed to deaths. Mr Toyoda as the head of the organisation may be held responsible.
i would like to think that if the same could be shown in other countries they would have the same reaction

i guess so, but just seems that everything that goes on that there is someone or some company that faces the US congress. But both valid points
but yes i see the demise of toyota over this and the re emerge of GM and FORD in the US

Here's a link from Feb' 9th that explains the background pretty well.
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6133U820100209The story has been pretty big over here in Japan. The main focus has been on the delay between the reported problems and the response from Toyota.
The brakes aren't so smooth in icy or bumpy conditions. There are fatal accidents occuring all the time in the US, so I guess that the goal of the inquest would be to determine whether this fault had any bearing on the 19 fatalaties that have involved Prius' in the US.

news coming in from the US that recalled toyotas that were ment to be fixed from the acceleration problem havent been fixed after the recall and customers still having 'nightmares' driving toyotas after they went in to be fixed.
So still trouble for toyota even more so now

It is about time Toyota were made to recall the HiLux. It has a fault with the air bag wiring wearing through in the steering column. That is a safety issue & should be addressed.
