Thoughts - Shops/Anzac day?

Should shops/centres such as Coles, Kmart, Myer etc be allowed to be open on Anzac Day?
Is this disrespectful?

I am leaning towards they should be closed - hence showing more respect? :-k

Am interested in other peoples thoughts?

I understand the thought but I'm not sure how not shopping means you show more respect to the Anzacs

I think there's time enough in the day to do both if that's what you wish to do

I voted YES.

Shops should be open whenever they want...!

Open up our state. :D

EVERYONE RESPECTS OUR ANZACS

If they had a vote, they would want them open.

NO DISRESPECT

I believe all public holidays should be exactly that, Public Holidays, only essential services to work with the possible exemption of hospitality etc.
Realistically I know it will never go back to that though

all shops should be closed those workers should be entitled to a day off instead of being forced to work. surely the stores such as coles woolies are opened enough hours regularly most are 6am to 9pm thats 15 hours per day apart from weekends why cant we do our shopping in that time

I dumped some green waste, fixed some shelving in the garage and washed the car before going to the footy - still respect the ANZACS as if it weren't for them I would have been trimming the bonsai, resealed the paper doorways and oiled the rickshaw. Not sure how shopping varies from any of those activities. Same for Good Friday for me.

Who that wants the shops open on public holidays/days of significance actually worked today?

If not, rather than answer should they be open, how about, would you want to work on these days?

Are Churches being offensive by having Sunday morning services on Anzac Day?

They should be closed so everyone can spend the day together out of respect. One day without shopping is not going to kill anyone anyway.

Perhaps businesses staffed by the proprietors and their families should be allowed the freedom of choice to open any day.
That way no employee is coerced to work, and the days free of the big competition may help keep small business viable.
If the small businesses survive that will help keep the big boys honest, and less likely to exploit the monopoly position they would otherwise have.

Having lived in Melbourne, I have come to favour more flexible shopping hours and the convenience of shopping when the car parks and check outs are not full.
We used to drop in at Coles on Glenferrie Rd about 11 pm on the way home on nights out.
We even went there at 2 am once.

I work every public holiday.

I actually enjoy it.

How come "Glenelg" shopping precinct gets away with it..?

It doesn't matter how large your shop is.

AH, tourist destination, hey...

Isn't Adelaide a tourist destination..? ;) :D

I can see why people would think you don't need to shops open on Anzac Day, they are open nearly all the time...but... why is it disrespectful to shop, but NOT disrespectful to go to a movie, fill up with petrol, watch a game of football etc? Surely one can be respectful regardless of whatever other activities they do during the day?

Shops will be closed on the Monday for Easter and the ANZAC Day public holiday on Tuesday.
Therefore shops will be only open on Easter Saturday

One church was a part of it, is the Salvation Army given any recognition on Anzac Day at all for their contribution?

It hasn't been approved in SA yet, Tuesday is only penciled in as a tentative public holiday.

All other states have approved the Tuesday in lue of the Monday for Anzac day so I would be very suprised if the SA government doesn't do the same.

Actually. as a young doctor in the public service, and the guy who had accepted the unpaid extra role of roster master, I worked most public holidays.
I didn't get paid more those days because I was on a [pitiful] fixed salary, but I was entitled to a day off in lieu.
I used to accumulate days in lieu and then use them to straddle a weekend and give myself a decent break every so often.
On duty during the day shift on public holidays usually meant an easier day too.

Should be left closed, employees that march or wish to attend marches etc. would be forced to work otherwise. If the shops aren't open, there is no pressure from employers.
