Named after Osmond Gilles (of Gilles Street fame). He was the treasurer for colony of South Australia from 1836 to 1839.

Garbage.
It's short for
Orange Guice Rd, as they used to have grape vines growing roadside. They shortened them name to "OG", to commemorate Orenthal J Simpsons acquittal of murdering his wife.
Hope this has helped.

I was always of the opinion it was an abreviation for Old Government Rd.

This is from the City of Burnside website (
http://www.burnside.sa.gov.au)
"Osmond Gilles' name is also remembered in many other locations around Adelaide such as Glen Osmond Road, Mount Osmond, Gilles Street (in the city), Gilles Plains and
OG Road."

Interesting, he must have been a big influence on the State/Colony, more than just for his role as Treasurer.

Good work Gilly, but you're wrong. Even the destitute folk out at Burnside call it
Old Goat road.

I can confim this from one of my Australian history texts. (Anyone who loves SA should read up on how our colony was started) Very interesting.
