LAP BAND SURGERY

I was just wondering if there is anybody out there who knows of anyone who has had this surgery? If so, I'd be keen to hear how they are going with it. I'm booked in to have it done at the end of May. I find it impossible to exercise these days (3 knee recons and need one on each knee still). Some people have told me I am taking the easy way out, but as far as I am concerned, they can get rooted. I'm not a massively obese bloke (just over 6 ft and 125 kilo), but my knees are spent and I am sick of taking half an hour to get up and about in winter due to my knees ceasing up. Losing 40 kilo will change my standard of living dramatically and I personally cannot wait to have it done. If there is anyone out there who knows someone who has had it done, I'd be keen to hear how they are going with it all.

I know 3 people who have had this done BC.

All three went great guns at first - lost all the weight they wanted.

1 - 10 years down the track - all weight back on.
2 - 8 years down the track - most weight back on.
3 - 4 years down the track - nearly all weight back on.

I think that if you have it done - great will power still comes into it for the rest of your life.
It's definitley no quick fix or 'easy way out' as some of your friends have put it.

I know a couple of people who have had it done and they have kept the weight off no problems. If you start putting weight back on, they inject the band with a saline solution, which tightens the band and thus reduces your appetite even more. Have the people you know had the band tightened?

No - weird hey - I think they had it done, lost all the weight they wanted to, got complacent and that was the end of it.

I don't know these 3 people intimately, just socially - so have never talked in depth with them about it - just know that they had it done.
One lady always says - I had lapband surgery and look at me now and shrugs here shoulders (She's put the weight back on)

So don't know in any detail.

Goodluck - hope it works for you and you get out of it what you want O:)

I know one bloke who it has worked really well for. He's still a big fella but by all reports he was a monster before he had it done (I didn't know him at that stage).

The only think with him is he can't stomach a lot of things anymore. Bread makes him throw up, and he doesn't touch the grog anymore. Says he just can't come at it since he's had the surgery done.

My brother, sister and mother have had it. It works as you say, as time goes on if you can keep your weight off, they remove the saline. If you are having difficulties keeping it off, they put more in.

Makes eating a chore, because some things you simply wont be able to eat because you won't be able to stomach it, and its different for different people. My sister can't eat bread, she almost vomits it straight back up since the surgery. My brother can't touch red meat, yet bread is fine. Strange.

Stuff what people say about the easy way out, if it improves your way of life and makes day to day better for you, I say go for it.

BC, I know one person who three years on has almost put most of the weight back on. She had some side effects from it, but overall she's fine.

One thought, why don't you look at getting your knees replaced rather than lap band? I'm in a long queue (too young at 39 to get my knee done just yet - and it's not debilitating) to get mine done but I'm more looking at quality of life cos it gives me grief all year round now. If you aren't able to exercise the chances of putting the weight back on will be higher than if you get your knees done, which will increase your quality of life, allowing you to exercise more, etc, etc.

Once I lose the weight, I will get the recons done and hopefully then, all should be good.

personally, i dont know how you could even think of this option. Food is so awesome and so is beer and wine, imagine not eating bread or red meat!!
just eat healthy and in moderation / with some exercise and you will drop the weight. then fix the knees.

It's not an overnight decision mate. Something that has taken a long time to decide. I can't wait.

So is this the reason you're having so many "sessions" now BC? ;)

Cos I can guarantee you, you won't be having any after the op!

I don't have many sessions as it is. As for drinking beer, that will be no problems after the op. I can still drink alcohol. Everything in moderation.

According to facebook, you're always drunk ;)

Beer is full of carbs - you'll have to start drinking 5 seeds ;)

Hey Bum crack all the best mate .As someone who has had 3 knee clean outs lost over 20 kilos put it back on and started losing it again(about your weight) .
Go For the banding.
I'd be more worried about the knee recons myself.
I made a promise after the third knee clean out never again .third and first hurt like hell.Second was not a worry.

If you have escaped at our weight(and I've seen bigger who don't have it) from type 2 diabetes good on you .
My weight is coming off more slowly this time hopefully the type 2 will go as well .
Your health is the most important thing lose the weight it will certainly ease the pain on the knees. And I have trouble exercising after 8 to 10 hour days on my feet lifting carrying etc there's nothing left in the tank.
All the best once again.
cheers
Mick

$2,800.00 with Private Health and around $18,000.00 with no private. They advised they don't normally do it if you don't have private, due to insurance issues etc. Better off getting private health for a year and then having it done.

It is being done for public patients at Flinders Medical Centre if they meet their criteria.
I know one person who had it done there last year.
