two Australians with families have died in Iraq and some pollies think the solution is to send more troops there. I'm not an expert and may not know all the facts but i think this is a joke. bring them home and let the Middle East wipe each other out... what are you thoughts?

We need them to help protect America's vital corporate interests.

There's no need to send more now, let the ones that are there ATM do the job and come home ASAP.

Status Quo.

Bigger issues to deal with with in the Asian and Pacific regions - Timor Leste, Solomon Islands, etc. Few people know the ADF has personnel in 10-12 locations worldwide at the moment, and is already stretched enough as far as capability goes.

I'd be surprised if any Government withdraws their troops any time soon...way to many potential untapped natural resources that governments would be desperate to get their claws into...oil, minerals etc etc etc etc. The country has never had it's resources exploited due to decades of conflict...quite literally a potential goldmine and almost no Gov would give up a chance for a slice of that pie.

Afterall you don't honestly think Maggie sent my boys to the Falklands in '82 to help 3500 inbreds do you... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/10100769.stm ...it's only ever been about the oil.

Oil might be the elephant in the room, but then if you gave that 100% credence half the armies of the world would be at barracks in Antarctica for all its resources...

There are other issues there worth resolving. Here begins the "opportunity cost" discussion. On second thoughts, here ends that discussion. I value my sleep tonight ;)

It's not just oil it's minerals as well and I suspect the race might be on when the Madrid Protocol runs out in about 30 years and Russia has already tried placing a flag under the other potentially vast reserves of untapped resources...the Arctic.

Or Mali and Mauritania considering it's well known there are active Al-Qaeda cells operating there :-?

A question I often reflect on myself.
Suspect it has a lot to do with............a recent trip to Mogadishu/Somalia? Ironically, Zimbabwe would be much easier than Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen etc.
As for the Madrid Protocol - I need to read that for another matter completely unrelated to this topic - now I have some extra motivation! ;)

...and nobody did much to stop the atrocities taking place in Rwanda and the Balkans either until they were forced to but I was helping send troops 4 days after Iraq invaded Kuwait.

Not much in the Solomons to hanker for - unless you want to take over their business catching and selling live dolphins to acquatic parks in South America.

I can't believe posts like this are allowed on this site, let alone any public forum that is moderated.

You Dogger are a racist, hate filled soul, who seems to get off on winding people up and making ridiculous blanket statements out of either complete ignorance or bitterness.

Nuke the place? Good idea. Wipe out all the poor innocent souls - men, women and children, whose only crime is trying to live life in a war torn country where oppression is the only form of leadership they've experienced and desperate poverty is all they've ever known.

I'd rather have asylum seekers from Afghanistan living in our country than people with your disgraceful, racist attitude.

How you can just tar every citizen of a particular country with the same brush is beyond me. You need to get out and see what the world is really like.

No there isn't, but East Timor has been of particular corporate interest for a long time.
