We are going to the next door neighbours 21st in a couple of weeks, we have know him for 16 years, had a bit to do with his family over the years but have had a lot to do with the son, my other half refers to him as her "other son" and her refers to her as his "2nd mum".
What is a reasonable amount to spend?, we have NFI.

With what you describe, I'd say $70-80.

Thanks mate, we were thinking $50 was a bit tight and weren't sure if $100 was too much

I'd be happy with this. Find out what he likes and get a high end bottle.

If they are a drinker (well it IS a 21st), a bottle of bourbon... $40-odd bucks...

Nobody should be encouraged to drink Bourbon - I haven't come across an enjoyable one yet, and I've tasted most around.
If you are giving any booze as a present pay a bit more for a decent Scotch or a proper Cognac, without going over the top.

Hmmmmmm...?
$200....?
What's $200 going to buy..?
Maybe a better option would be to ask....
What they would like..?

$100 would be my tip Ian. A voucher is the best.

All depends on how much you earn and can afford
Im around that age so have 21st pretty often
for us we normally chuck in $50 each and get them a big gift from a heap of people
otherwise a bottle of something would be nice. Chivas or Glenlivet are good for a alright price!
Totally upto you though?!

When i turned 21, one of the best gifts i got was a bottle of Glen Fiddich (not sure on exact spelling).
So i say go with the high end bottle of spirit.

An engraved puta mug is always a good keepsake, I still have some from my 21st, this can mirror your spending capacity and it's hard to detect a dollar value.

as all of us are outsiders, we've got no idea on your current financial situation, and what the kid is like.
my 21st a couple years ago, my brothers father-in-law, who at the time i had only met twice, bought me a Collingwood guernsey signed by the whole team and framed and stuff. i wouldnt expect to pay any less than $500 for that. buuuutttttt.........he is a multi-millionaire. the same year, my mother gave me a $50 gift voucher to Colonades, as she's always a bit light on for cash.
so it really depends what you can afford mate. as you can see by the above story.

I'd take the $50

I always try and judge it by the amount that the Mrs. and I would drink. Say for example we were both going to have a big session then I would probably spend about $100 as it would cost us more than this if we hit the pubs. On the other hand, if it was just myself drinking and this Mrs. is driving then somewhere between $50-$70 is what I would spend.
If its someone close to me and they mean a lot to me then I would usually double it or thereabouts.
In other words there is no right or wrong answer. As TBB has said it also depends upon your personal finances and that is something that only you know. So if you think that what you have is too cheap, it probably is. Just as if you think you have spent too much then you probably have.
