Most of us have a fleeting interest in all things out their in our skies.
Meteors, comets, eclipses etc.
Since tonight has a partial eclipse of the moon I thought I'd start a thread where we can post any upcoming events that are visible to the naked eye or those with basic telescopes like myself.

Tonights partial has just over 50% of the Moon going into the Earths inner shadow. Because this is not a total eclipse, we won't see the Moon go copper coloured, but we will see a substantial darkening of half of the Moon.

Mid eclipse is 9:08 pm ACST. The eclipse finishes at 10:30 pm ACST.

Anyone else here have the odd glimpse of the skies through a telescope or attended a viewing night ?

Wow hope you get to see it...shame it's not a full eclipse cos a blood moon is stunning.

Are you guys far enough south to get the aurora australis???

Having seen the northern lights a few times I'd love to try and see it's southern counterpart if conditions are right when I'm over there next year. Didn't see it on either tour in the Falklands so hoping for third time lucky.

On a similar theme if, like a lot of people nowadays, your night sky suffers from light pollution you can still look up in daylight. I like the Cloud Appreciation Society. It's great for young or old and is global...this is their photo gallery for SA... http://cloudappreciationsociety.org/gal ... +australia there's even a pic of Unley Oval

Bugger, wish I saw this earlier!!
Cracking night for it too - crystal clear outside.

My interest in the skies extends mainly to photographing it.
The moon is a great subject, at are the Northern Lights and a long exposure of a stary night to create something like:

It wasn't that great to be honest DA.
If I hadn't of known this was happening I would've thought the moon was just at half.
Hopefully this topic keeps and people can share pictures and upcoming events.

I've heard that that park is pretty spectacular. I just downloaded the first star trail image that popped up on google.
