1 out - probably 11 or 12.
2 together - when the oldest is 11 or 12 and the youngest 8 or 9.

9-10 if popping down the shops etc...knowing they had access to a phone to contact us if required and not to answer the door under any circumstances (made it awkward one day when the grandparents did a drop in )
