I reakon there's every chance the IR reforms will cost the coalition anyway, regardless of who's leading them ... Beazley leading the opposition would be the main obstacle to this though I'd say

There main obstacle is "factional warlords" in the labour party. These are ones that are behind all the in fighting pretty much all of the time. It like its a set of parties with in a party.

But anyway back to the main event. Hard to tip here. Costello has the reach over howard, but little johny is a sly character.......

Howard as the God-father has the votes within the Liberal party to maintain his leadership,Costello as the aspiring understudy doesn't have the balls or the backing to challenge him in the party room, simple really.Costello challenges and will end up outed all together with no support. The people that will back Howard in a vote may want to vote Costello, but all back room deals involve each and every member voting like sheep to maintain the current status and look after themsleves.Any one who votes with Costello will end up being outed by the Howard supporters along with PC.

Big problem with the IR campaign is that it is driven by the unions, not the ALP, and the public face of the campaign is Greg Combet, not the Bomber.

Is this the beginning of the end for the Coalition?

Should be.

But the factional warlords are more interested in settling old scores than winning government.

He's a smart cookie,no-one becomes Federal Treasurer if they aren't,he knows what support he has and he knows what would happen if he did challenge. That is why he is sitting back and waiting his turn.

Excellent post. I have long been an admirer of the current government that has given the country a decade or more of ecomomic prosperity, unemployment is low, young people leaving school now have a much better chance of getting a job than 10 years ago. Now to to the negatives, up until now the government has used sensible pragmatism to run the country an avoided being swept up in "issues" created by the left, this has now changed, IDEOLOGY has replaced pragmatism, hence we have the IR laws. Ideology like religion can be used to justify any crime or injustice. The end for the coalition? just could be. Costello is seen by many who hate him as a right wing Boogeyman, I think if he wins the Liberal leadership he will water down these laws to save the party at the next election. There was need for industrial reform but not the radical and unjust laws we now have.

Too much common sense and intellect for this site Mick, move on.No,really good post,I too rate Costello highly as he has in an economic sense made this country prosper more than ever before. On the other side is little Johnnies IR laws which may well have cost me my job in the last 24hrs.(More on that as news comes to hand).Costello is clever enough to realise Howard is holding on until the last minute, and if that means the Coalitions support is spiralling down in the lead up to the next election, watch JH jump ship, like some kids did off a boat some time ago,or did they?

Costello too will know what the IR reforms have done to his chances of being PM and will do whatever he can to avoid a landslide in Labor's direction at the next election, but as CP said,Beasley being the opposition leader may make this upcoming election an unloosable one for Howard. The IR reforms and any subsequent changes made to them between now and then will be the decider.

Unfortunately the Liberals have no opposition.
I think the Labour party should be listed on the Stock Excange
as the All Ordinaries .
