Jeez, I don't know why makers of Moselle are so anxious to restrict the name to the region. How else am I going to recognise it in a four litre goon cask, and thus know to stay the hell away from it?

The whole naming thing and regional authenticity is a huge deal here in Europe and it doesn't only apply to alcohol. Things like Parma ham can only be called Parma if they are made in a particular area...same with Stilton cheese, Melton Mowbray pork pies and I'm not sure if they've only applied or now have the right but I think Cornish pasties are doing the same...applies to loads of things and the list grow longer every year.

Been doing some casual work in a liquor warehouse for a few weeks and I wondered when the eff Tawny Port became known as just "Tawny". Didn't realise it was one of these naming issues, thought it was just the manufacturers being lazy.

The fact that it's in a cask should be a dead give away for starters.

It's easy for me, I've called it "Sturt" for years. Would you like a glass of Sturt? Yes, I'd love a glass of Sturt. This Sturt is very easy to drink. I had a yup-n-yunder from drinking too much Sturt last night.

So the naming issues wont affect me in the slightest. Oh, unless I have to go and buy some.

My old man opened a bottle of 1966 Yalumba Port over the weekend and I had sip..... was surprisingly nice for something so old !!!! Was very surprised indeed.....

Port keeps, at least while the bottle is sealed, and for along time after opening really. The alcohol is a preservative.
I still have some 1979 Grandfather, and until about 2003 I still had some of the 1926 vintage Cyprian Port I had bought a dozen of in 1979.

When my son was born in 1996 I purchased a bottle of 21 year old King William Port ( William being Jnr Boon ) and have sealed the box tight with clear tape with clear instructions for it not to be opened until his 21st Birthday.

Upon recommendation I turn the bottle twice yearly a quarter turn. On his birthday in July and at Christmas.

My younger brother gave my wife and I a keg for our wedding (about 14 litres I think?? Can't remember). We've had it for 2 years now and it's just starting to get very tasty. The problem is it doesn't stay in the keg for long enough!

My old man has a much bigger keg that he's had for near on 20 years. The stuff that comes out of that is liquid gold!
