Pubs and clubs to be closed between 4am-7am

OPPOSITION Leader Isobel Redmond says closing pubs and clubs early will secure South Australia's reputation as a "nanny state."

Ms Redmond said venues should be able to open as long as their licence permits to facilitate a vibrant and fun city precinct.

I fail to see how forcing a whole bunch of drunk people out in to the street at the same time is going to curb violence!

Hindley St on a Saturday night is a Disgrace to society but I don't see how this will solve the problem :?

Yet the Casino stays open? They must rake in millions for the Government bank accounts for them to be exempt

If your out at 4am then you run the risk of getting into a situation. If your out at 4am you know the risks. Dont like it, Dont go there. Simple
Legal Drinking age to 21 would be a good idea too

Pubs should open at 11.00am and close at 6pm every night of the week. :D

If you need booze outside of these times you should go to your own fridge! :D

Stay home and drink. :D
Smile :)

What is happening to our SANFL guys...

I disagree. I've always seen and been in more altercations on the East End rather than Hindley.

Has there every been a worse example of public policy?? Yep shut all other pubs at 4 pm but keep the Casino open. I wonder where all the pissed idiots are going to be by 4:15 am?? Not that the casino will stop them from entering as they exist to extract peoples hard earned any way they can.

Dumb Dumb Dumb Dumb Dumb

This is a bit like the anti bikie legislation, a knee jerk reaction to suck up to the cops and another unashamed popularist policy by a tired and cynical government. The bikie legislation was an attack on human rights and unconstitutional. This stupid 4 am closing will not work as pointed out by others above. Seriously if we want to do something about social problems in this state. We should:

1. Close all pubs and clubs at midnight
2. Close the casino for good
3. Get rid of the pokies

4. Think about restricting Sunday trading by pubs and bottle shops

What we will lose in tourism, we will gain back in less expenditure to repair social damage. I'm not a wowser but I don't gamble and I'm rarely out past 11.00 pm these days.....too bloody old

That, and because all the pubs shut between 3-4AM, all the dickheads spill out into the streets during that time. Hmmmm.....

Even if the pub doesn't actually have to close, why would they pay staff wages for 3 hours that noone will be spending any money there. What are they going to do? Start serving breakfast? They would just keep 2 or 3 people on to keep the pokie area open

I remember being in Melbourne in June 08 and they had introduced a 2am "lock out" where you had to stay in the pub/club you were in and not go from place to place. If you were not in a place by 2am, then bad luck go home (or of course to the Casino)..

Similar to what they want here. Melbourne didn't continue with it ... here is a small snippet from a report done afterwards..

KPMG was commissioned by the government to survey both venues and patrons after the lockout trial ended. It was reported that the lockout had not worked effectively and that the State Government was not going to pursue the lockout plan. In fact, it was reported that violent crime was up during the lockout trial peroid

The lesson there is that half measures don't work.
Shut pubs and clubs at 11pm Fridays and Saturdays, and 9pm the rest of the week.
The right idea is get the patrons out before they are totally drunk and more irresponsible than usual - and of course police public drunkenness and public nuisance,.
[ Out of vested interest, I'd give restaurants a little more leeway during the week for those consuming wine or beer leisurely with a substantial meal. ;) ]

For someone who reputedly is very intelligent, you post some crap sometimes.....

You can shut the pubs what ever time suits. Just means people change their drinking habits. Pubs shut early, people start drinking earlier, there fixed. Most people who go out to pubs/clubs to get on the turps start drinking at home/friends place, cafe/restaurant before they get to the pubs in the first place. They're already half cut, and therefore just need to top up and bingo it's on.

Spilling everyone out onto the streets, at the same time, no matter what time it is will be ineffective, as people will still be just as drunk, and the problem will still be there.....
The joy of being on the hill drinking beer cannot be understated
