are nightclubs going over the top ? (with security)

Postby bayman » Tue Apr 12, 2011 11:22 pm

i got invited to go to a nightclub on saturday night in town by a young girl i know who was celebrating her birthday with a few friends, i declined to go for a couple of reasons which she understood, anyway i ran into her today & asked how it went & this was her reply ''it was great, i got smashed & i can't remember anything from when we were looking for a taxi to get home but we got asked for our id (which she didn't mind even though it was her 26th birthday) & then they took our fingerprints''  ................i know there is a safety aspect to this but surely taking fingerprints is way over the top & i thought the police was the only organisation that could take fingerprints ??? :? :?

to you young whippersnappers out there, is this rare or does this form of security happen at most if not all places

(i haven't named the 'nightclub' just in case i shouldn't)
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I wouldnt be giving my fingerprints to a nightclub just to get in.. think it says something about the standard of people in there IMO..

i know a couple of places scan your ID for future records etc.. but fingerprints is going too far me thinks

I have have had my ID scanned at a few night clubs around town. After discovering that they participate in this practice it is my last visit as well, God knows what they do with the scanned images after you exit the venue.

Looking back at it sober I find that they are the venues that have had plenty of trouble, Even one venues me and a group of mates bribed the bouncers to let us in front of a long line about 5 years ago. They were always turfing out drunk twats as well

Had my licence taken in Melbourne a few years ago which I was not really happy about.....but went with it.

If a night club asked me....I would not even go there. Probably had troubles in the past or other issues (with owners/licencees etc....)

Thank god Im over that scene now..... :?
Is out of change.....thanks Cambridge Clarrie!!!

Exactly. There endeth the story. There's no way I would let a pub copy/scan my drivers licence - especially when you have no idea who is associated with those premises. At best, the scan should be emailed in real time to a central server held by SAPOL, not stored in a locally owned and operated computer on site. Even worse, hackers could hijack the computer and remotely download all those identity documents.

Fingerprints are completely OTT - realistically, what can be done with them? If police come looking for someone, they would only be able to take ALL the fingerprints with them. It sounds more like a strategy to keep people IN the said club, as moving on to another place with blackened fingers is just not a good look.

Well that solves the ink issue (thanks Banker), but it doesn't resolve all the other issues.

i dont believe it is going over the top. With the glassing incidents and drinks being spiked its saftey for a reason. And if they dont know who did what to whom then if someone remembers a face then they can look back on the photos and look at the finger prints if someones things were stolen or tampered with.

Good on them i say. I havent been out to a night club for years but from what i rememebr it was shite at the time.

At HQ they have people watching the cameras of the people in the line and they pull people out of the line that have been kicked out before and/or barred from the premesis. I think its a good thing!

As for the ID, i dont look for trouble when im out just have a good time and a few drinks so dont need to worry. I believe that the copies of IDs are deleted if no incidents happen and/or when an investigation is complete.

I've booked to see a gig at HQ (Art vs Science) in July.

Footy Smart - are any of these copying licences and fingerprinting shennanigans going on there?

I read the story in the local paper (as MT79 mentions above) about The Vic Hotel also.

From a mother of an 18 year old who's recently deciding she might like to go night clubbing :-ss

I actually thought at the time - what a great idea.
I mean if you are purely going there for a 'good time' then you would have no problems in having your licence 'scanned'.
And if you were going there purely to cause trouble - then you wouldn't want it scanned, so probably wouldn't go into the premises.
This meaning the ones who are inside are more likely to be 'safe'.
So I thought - hmmm - what a good deterent.

However - I never really gave consideration to what happens with the licence details etc afterwards.
So am now thinking that yes - someone (police/whatever) really should be making sure that all these details etc are deleted or not passed on for 'missuse'.

I do think the whole finger printing thing is going too far.
You get what you give....

If they take ID, I'd assume they're bound by the Privacy Act, and therefore would have to display the policy where they take the ID.
