Not sure if there was another thread similar to this but it's worth knowing. We've been planning a party for some time now and the subject of noise complaints came up in discussion. Generally we get along pretty well with our neighbours but have heard some horror stories when it comes to party complaints and a search of the SAPOL website doesn't give much detail. We've got a DJ lined up so want to do it by the book in the hope we avoid any trouble.

Does anyone know if there are any official rules or laws on noise complaints? Ie is there a midnight cut off or similar? We've organised a quick letter box drop in advance to let the immediate area know but want to know where we stand if one of the local nannas has their hearing aid turned right up

Just do what I do and invite all the neighbours to your party. That way if they turn up they can't complain and if they don't turn up, well they can't say they havn't had any warning.

Hire a hall.

This way no-one knows where you live.

It may be advisable to get insurance.

When you realise the cost of insurance, You may have no party.

Stay home and only make it a family show.

Invite only.

Stipulate on the invitations, Party time 2pm till 5pm....

Likewise. I'm sitting here pissing my self laughing and the missus thinks I'm nuts.....

A guy up the road from us had his daughter's 13th birthday party ruined (in his opinion) by a vist from the police to his loud racket of a party at 10pm. He then went off in a drunken rage at the immediate neighbours (who compained because they had a newborn) not realising about 5 different people had rung the police so I found out later. His daughter was in tears and clearly the whole night ended really badly for them. So you'd want to avoid that scenario.

I think the tolerance for noisy suburban parties is a lot less than it used to be so if you don't want the embarrassment of a police visit I reckon plan to tone down the music at 10pm. Maybe plan for an earlier start say 5pm so you get a decent run at it. Most people seem understanding enough up until 10pm but after that the patience runs out.

Alternatively, have the party in a hall somewhere where you can get away with going later. Or budget for 5 taxis to take the hard core revellers off into town after 10pm.

If you ring the police or the council they'd have some tips I would have thought.

Noise guidelines are under the remit of the EPA, IIRC. Try their website. Your local council may also be able to provide you with some good basic info.

Yep that's what I usually do. Although one time this woman from across the road came to our party, stayed until about midnight and then (at least we think it was her) called the cops as soon as she got home!

Haha yes they were... Interesting... Posts! But we have taken the invite only suggestion on board so it was useful, though we are planning to run a little later than 5pm! Hondo you're spot on I think we will start early and hope the crowd burns out and heads to town or elsewhere by midnight or so.

Think we will just wing it on the night and hope for the best. Our closest neighbours are generally pretty cool so hopefully they contact us first if they have any concerns on the night.

If you want a memorable party, I suggest putting it on Facebook.

Pretty sure noise comlaints dont have a time line. Was at a JJJ hottest 100 party one year and the cops came round about 3pm and told us to turn stereo down
