Hello to any people with plumbing experience and anyone willing to have a guess.

For the past month or so my shower has 'gurgled' towards the end and after the shower has finished. Lately, even after brushing teeth/washing hands, the hand basin in the same room also has a (smaller, higher-pitched and less long) gurgle.

A few days ago, by the time the shower was finished water wasn't draining immediately, i.e. one cm or 2 of water had accumulated. That drained away after 5 or 10 seconds, with the same gurgling/burping water sound.

I assumed hair had clogged up the pipe, so yesterday and today I put some drain-cleaner stuff down. Still get the gurgling sounds, but water does seem to have stopped accumulating by the end of the shower.

Do you think I'm on the right track, i.e. it's just hair/whatever, and I should keep doing the drain-cleaner routine for a couple of more days? Or, is it time to call in a plumber?

Have you taken off the drain cover and cleaned all the shit off it?

Do that and you may notice a difference.

I think you have a serious blockage closer to the road( probably roots now trapping paper.) .Many plumbers do a quick clean and cut of the roots in drains for less than 100 bucks (pick anyone in your local messenger). This aint going to be fixed with any cleaner down the drain, I suspect you are wasting money here with stuff like that.If the shower is backing up try flusing the loo a few times while the problem exists in the shower .I suspect the loo level will rise up on the 2nd or 3rd flush.
If this happens make the call quickly as the problem is only going to get worse and soon you will have no movement in your drains ar all

Had the exact same thing happen. It was tree roots. I had to get it cleared then I dug up the pipes where the roots were entering & replace them.

Same thing happened to me 4 or 5 years ago, weeds/roots from neighbours' place caused blockage, and I had to get my plumber in.

Same thing happened to us twice in the last month!

Drains were 'going off' - toilets started not flushing properly.
Washing machine drain overflowed into the hall way
And it all esculated within the hour.

So am suggesting you get it looked at sooner rather than later.

Turns out that the top of the septic where everything 'drops' was clogged because this 'section' had 'perished/dropped' out of place with age.

Not sure on the cost as we are renting - so didn't have to pay a thing.
(Well until they put our rent up - which is inevitable...lol)

I have an excellent plumber providing that you live in the right area, charges me less than half of the others I've had in for the same problem. We have a blockage approx. every 6 months in the same spot. PM me for any details.

Turns out it was a large ball of hair that had partially blocked the drain. The plumber said it's not good to put that "draino" stuff down the drain - short term easing of the problem perhaps, but it can end up causing a more serious blockage down the track.

has happened here within the last week ever since i put the washing machine hose back to the drain rather than the grey water hose for the lawn..

bloody noise is a pain in the ass with the air bubbles breaking the surface.. and always around 11pm regardless of when the water was used

Now there is water coming out of the inspection hole thing in the footpath... is it possible that its blocked on the sa water/united water side rather than mine?

Get someone out soon to have a look. I know it's easy to wait, but the problem is very unlikely to just go away...

Ours was free, luckily... we called the builders of the house, thinking it was a more serious problem, and their guy had a look, fixed it, said "I should be charging you for this, really..." but left without charging. A rare win...

Also got a freebie, as it ended up being a blockage out side of our property.. SA Water turned up within 15 minutes of the call to the call centre..
