my 16yr old lad is hoping to start as an apprentice roofer in the near future and we have discussed amongst other things, how much board he will pay should he get this job, i was wondering is there a ball park figure out there, he will be on about $400 per week - or so he thinks

When our son started his apprenticeship he paid us $30 a fortnight - and there after every 12 months we added $10.
By the time he left home he was paying $50 or $60 a fortnight.

As my brother pointed out - after washing, food, me making his lunches, electricity etc, etc - we were paying him to live here

My sister-in-law charged her kids $50 a week and that was about 8 years ago.

Junior Boon ( 14 ) is working part-time at KFC West Lakes. He does 1 or 2 shifts a week and gets paid around the $40-55 mark.

We ask for 10% of that ( we bank it for him ) as "board", well, thats what we tell him. It is being banked for him and we are matching it $1 for $1, he is not aware of that.

I think 10% is reasonable. If the lad gets $400 per week I think $30-40 per week would be a reasonable ask.

Depends how much he chips in with the housework

My step-son does nothing around the house and we charge 10% of what he should earn in a normal week.

Roofer hey? Hope he's a resilient young fella, got a mate who did a roofing apprenticeship and he worked/works pretty hard.
When I moved out to start my apprenticeship at 18, I was paying $70 a week rent (half of $140) and earning $370 a week.
But I also had living expenses etc and I got hammered every weekend, so I never had any money left.
Booney's idea is excellent. 10 per cent sounds fair.

I like the idea of offering discounts for housework too. $5 for vacuuming the house, $5 for mowing the lawn and weeding the garden, $5 for cleaning the bathroom.

That way if they want a housekeeping service, they pay for it.

You got off* lightly.
Before we were married(21yrs ago) my wife worked full time, did all the house work (ie cooking, cleaning etc) and was charged $90 a week for board. Italian family so no co-habitation before marriage, so that was a contributing factor to a short engagement!

Sorry, I didnt see your comment. I thought with teenage children you would have some sage advice.

Im 21 and still live at home, dont pay a cent in bored and do F**K all around the house, feel a bit bad sometimes but then i just remember that my sister is 24 still lives at home and also doesnt pay a cent.

just before i moved out back in '87 i was paying $100 per fortnight i reckon and that covered everything, all bills, mum washing and ironing my clothes, making my lunch for work etc, i had it waaaaay too good

Stampy, If you want them to hang around for a while, charge them enough board so they can't save for their own place, but not enough to drive them out.

If you want to get rid of them, charge em either nothing so they can save and move out quick, or plenty so that it becomes cheaper for them to move out and rent somewhere.
