Not sure if anyone has had any experience having a "concertina" type door installed before.

I have a small passageway that I want to have a door installed in. The doorway is below..



A handyman is going to install it for me, he has provided me with 3 options, the 2 best options are below..





The best option appears to be the top (white) one. However I can't decide if there would be enough room to walk through when the door is pushed back.

Anyone got an opinion on the 2 door options?

how wide is your opening? Bi-fold doors like the top one have door panels less than 50mm thick. so the total space taken up would be no more than 100mm

Thanks for the info heater. I'm not certain on the width, but I would estimate around 80cm.

If it was to only take up 10cm, that would be a fairly good outcome.

Although the second door doesn't look as good, I am thinking though that as it pushes directly across, this may give it a better look, than the top one that pushes a little back and to the side.

Wouldn't the second option be thicker than the first when it's folded back as there are more panels stacked together? which would make the first one the better choice.

You could be right there JAS, and pretty much everyone who I emailed the above photos to last week suggested the top (white) one was the best. I think I'll go with that option now. The only reservation I have is that the other one is a bit "neater" as it slides across, where the top option pushes up and across.

No, I don't think so, because of the restricted area, there's nowhere for it to slide across past beyond the doorway.

GWW, we have a double door leading to our extension and have two 'white' options to divide the areas. We normally leave one closed (whilst the heater is on) and leave the other open to hear the kids down the other end of the house.

I'm 6ft, 90kgs and I can get through very easily. You can carry stuff through there as well. Effectively the distance you lose is the thickness of the doorx2 when folded.

I'll endeavour to take a photo of our set up and post it later on tonight.

I don't have an architectural reason, I just think the other one would be a real pain...

here is a grainy shot of the doors as I described.

Note that from the frame to the edge of the door that's shut, it's about 810mm. My other doorways are about 780, so I'd be losing an extra 30mm on my standard doorways.

Thanks gadj, I'm guessing then that that would be about the distance I'd have to walk through, if I was to go with the top listed door in my original post in this thread. It does look a reasonable gap.

I wish my doorway was a bit wider, such as the one in your photo - so I had more options - but I'm hopeful it will turn out well once installed.

My folks have the top one at their place and it seems to work OK, except perhaps it "drifts" closed a bit after it's been fully opened. You might check if either of them have some sort of "lock" that keeps them fully open, or fully closed for that matter.

True Fish. Ours aren't near any drafts but it's good to keep the kids away. GWW, if you've got kids, be careful for jammed fingers or little bits of skin on fingers or hands.

Most internal doors to bed rooms and other rooms are 820mm wide.
Some people have a 720mm to the WC or other areas if room is tight and there are no problems
the bi fold is the best option IMO and would look better hung aswell. You shouldnt have any problem with room to get through the opening.
