We obviously eat very differently!

Box of weet bix and 2l of milk = a week's breakfast.
loaf of bread and jar of peanut butter = a week's lunches.
5x coles roast chook, 5 pack of steamed veg = 5 of 7 dinners
Then get yourself a fillet burger combo from KFC once a week, and a pint and parmy deal once a week at the pub.
Add in half a dozen of each apples and bananas for snacks during the week.

Weetbix - $6.00
Milk - $3.00
loaf of bread - $4.40
Jar of peanut butter - $5.40
Chooks - $12.50 x 5 = $62.50
Veg - $5.00
6 bananas - $5.00
6 apples - $5.50
KFC fillet burger combo - $11.45
pint and parmy deal - $25.
-------
$133.25

Enough left over for a tub of ice cream and a packet of mixed lollies for the odd dessert.

Sure, its not the most glamorous set of meals, but once again, we get down to choices. Are you trying to get into the housing market, or are you wanting to eat out 5 nights a week?

Son continually eats into his savings but then I see a shitload of kfc and maccas bags in his car…….and he ain’t doing doordash! Pisses me off, especially when I have 2 freezers full of gourmet food, there would have to be 10 kilo of rib-eyes and scotchies in there amongst a plethora of other fine food.

Yup, grabbing the takeaway is often the easy choice, but it is where you can bleed money.

Don't get me wrong, saying 5 BBQ chickens a week for $62.50 was an over simplification, but for people to suggest $12.50 isn't enough for a dinner aren't really trying imo.

EG:

Woolies do a BBQ pack, 8 snags, 4 burgers, $10.50, plus a loaf of bread, and that's two dinners for $15.00 total.
Frozen pizza and a bag of wedges is under $12.00
A 400g rump steak will cost you around $10.00
500g mince meat ($9.00) + Jar of pasta sauce ($4.50) + packet of spaghetti ($3) will do you two meals for $16.50 total.

No greens or any type of salad or veg? What are you eating the following week? Will be a blimp after eating this for a few weeks

Yeah apart from everything else, the lack of fresh vegetables and weekly junk food don't exactly augur well - no use being able to afford a house if you're heart's exploded in the process of saving!!

Mate, all you need to do is eat peanut butter sandwiches every day for 10 years and you can buy a $350k unit. Who said the Australian dream was dead? F*cking kidding me these blokes.

All the news reports about the cost of living pressures obviously doesn't impact upon this, the amount of people who are only ever employed on a casual basis making loan applications almost impossible, people paying rent are obviously excluded from these sums as it could only be people living at home. The insular nature of the "acai bowl and avo toast" comments are dripping in "I'm a Boomer and I'm ok Jack".

Doesn’t leave much money for:
Sushi
Almond soy latte
Smashed avo on toast
Acacia bowls
Smoothies

Poor buggers!

Forgot Vapes & Coke

There was veg in the initial list that covered 5 days.
There was also apples and bananas.

But yeah, as a 21 year old I didn’t eat a lot of rabbit food.

Mate I’m more than ok these days but I bought a house very young(my own deposit I saved) and did do it reasonable tuff for the first 5-10 years or so.
Worked full time and studied part time as well as buying a house by myself.
I know the stats will show it’s harder to ‘live’ these days but it’s not impossible to buy a unit/small house still if you set goals.

I just think we allow the generation now to say it’s too hard so they give up that dream without even trying first.

Don't even get me started on the rental nonsense. Paying ridiculous amount a week for houses that wouldn't have been half the price 5 years ago. And the hoops you have to jump. For example, just to confirm i am me applying. Apparently birth certificates, passports and driver licenses are only worth 10 points of ID. But bank statements and credit ratings are worth 50. It's harder than ever to rent, let alone buy. It's a shit show out there and the fact cost of living continues to rise buy salaries are staying the same is f******

The mortgage doesn’t go up as your wage grows.
Yes, the other costs go up, but your mortgage as a percentage of your wage drops each year.

If you aren’t willing to bring your lunch from home for a year or two, and still expect to be able to buy your own place at 21, I’d suggest your level of entitlement needs examining.

If you aren’t willing to bring lunch from home for a year or two, then don’t buy a place at 21, save for two more years, your repayments will drop from $17k to $14k and you can spend that extra $10 a day on buying lunch.

Define struggle?
I’m sure it’s a hell of a lot different now to what we had versus our parents.
