Same here, love living here but wouldn't visit Adelaide if I lived elsewhere in a million years, just no reason to come here.

There's is a lot to like about Adelaide, but being involved in the music scene I'd never move back, or at least not in the foreseeable future. The music scene in Adelaide at the moment is drowning not waving and it would do my head in. In Melbourne the choice is unbelievable (even better than Sydney). Sure the traffic sucks and housing is unaffordable but that is the price you pay. WIth no kids we can...just.

I had the option of living wherever I liked in Australia or the UK once I had only myself to please after my wife died.

I have cousins in Sydney an could have moved there.
I was living in Melbourne at the time and could have bought a decent unit in Southbank.
I toyed with living in the UK, exercising the "Right of Abode" my mothers nationality gives me, for the convenience of travel.
Money was not a restraint.

I even considered that I could afford a reasonable unit in Malibu if I wanted it - but it didn't really appeal.

In the end I chose Adelaide for the easy lifestyle, the ease of getting around from a base in the nearby hills, and of course the convenience of proximity to old school and university friends.

Of course, Pubs and Clubs are not something I have ever cared about.
(Nor have any of my friends.)

Yet the other day you were complaining that it was too difficult to get to Adelaide oval, one of the big attractions on lonely planets list.

A couple of years back I got sat next to a couple of fat boorish yobs on a JetStar flight home from the sunshine coast. I had a few words with them upon arrival in Sydney. Upon learning I was heading to Adelaide, one of them said "don't get off there... you know what Adelaide is? Proof that Tasmanians can swim."

One of the many nice things about Adelaide - and they are legion - is that dickheads like the above steer well clear of it.

for a sports nut you should know that it is state of origin rugby league , not rugby.
Melb cup is rubbish - worst day's racing of the spring, Derby Day is where it is at.

I've had a short trip up to Darwin, didn't think much of the place to be honest.

Spent some time in Cairns during silly season, didn't really enjoy it but it didn't "break" me either.

Agree about the beer and loose women ... re the women just not enough to go around worked and lived there on and off for about 18 months and its a sausage fest with all the ajs around

Adelaide is a state that i dont think people can fully appreciate until they go else where.

It may be a bit boring and not have the amusement parks or events other big states do, but i wouldn't live anywhere else!

Reasonably quiet, scenic, good foods/wine, everything is close, no major traffic issues, easy to navigate city layout, still holds major events, affordable living.

I'm annoyed the state government now wants to wreck the place by allowing tall unit complexes outside the CBD.

Our state government seems to think they can push the public into a lifestyle that involves living in little boxes by making car parking difficult, and encouraging inner city living and using public transport while they also save the money involved in providing public transport to outer areas. They are possibly influenced by pressure from commercial builders who need an annual population growth rate of about 2% to make a satisfactory profit, and don't care what it does to quality of life.

Studies of laboratory rats show that they become more aggressive if crowded together and it works that way with most animals.

It is all about saving money for important things like MP's perks as devout socialist Hugh Stretton found many years ago when he got the boot from the SA Housing trust board because he objected to similar crowding being introduced then as a cost saving measure. He had also insisted public housing should be spread though the community and not built in clumps that create ghettos.

I admit my bias - I can't imagine anyone would want to live in the form of tiny hole these places generally offer even at more than $500K per unit.
(I've looked at city apartment plans with a view to possible investment opportunities but can't bring myself to contribute to it, even for money I could make.)

London and NYC both have populations of over 8m people in a land area smaller than metropolitan Adelaide. A complete lack of foresight has crippled transport options in Adelaide and if the politicians get their population growth that they want then it will only get worse.

The fact that, by either public transport or car, it takes either the same time or longer to get from Noarlunga to Elizabeth than it would to get from Essex to Heathrow or Staten Island to Connecticut is a joke.

Urban sprawl is not a cost effective way for tax payers either. Even choosing to live 40km's outside the CBD you are still not guaranteed the large backyard that the people of your generation took for granted.

I am not suggesting we go to the lengths that NYC and London have but we can look at them to improve what we have now rather than just keep sending our city further north and south without the appropriate infrastructure for it.
