Shifty Lizard Brewery - Willunga :

Nice little spot, it was either an old deli or pizza bar or something, seats around 30 inside, around 12-15 down the driveway/beer garden outside, 8 out on the footpath/frontage. Aircon inside, under umbrellas in the driveway,

It was their first weekend of offering an "extended menu", basically panini toasties. they'd sold out of a couple of styles as they were a bit overwhelmed with the amount of patrons in yesterday, they can also order wood over pizzas from the place down the road. I missed out on the panini I wanted, but for $8 the one I got with roast beef, cheese, pickles and relish was bloody good.

With 7 beers on tap I tried a paddle for $15 ( 4 butchers - good value ) I went the Sesh'n Ale (4.2%) a crisp, lighter pale, the Pale Ale (5%) which is your traditional, robust pale, the IPA ( 6.5% ) your modern hipster IPA and the Shifty Lizard (7%) a hibiscus infused purple people eater. I took away a mixed 6 pack for $28.

Nice spot, would be easy to be packed on a nice day if a group popped in.

South Coast Brewing - Willunga :

In an industrial estate this is a very much a start up facility. The bar and vats are in a shed, the tables under cover are under a flat tin roof ( think 1970's carport ) and there's some seating under umbrella's in the car park / outside area. Not sure about food on offer, I don't think there was a kitchen so.....

Again went the tasting paddle ( 4 beers, $12, smaller than butchers ), I went the Southern Session Ale, blonde, summery, crisp, the Porties Pale Ale, bit dark for my liking, heavy coffee/chocolate notes, the Maslins Red Ale, more nutty, still a bit chocolatey and the Bitter Sou'Westerly which had Friday night football in the winter months written all over it.

I took away a mixed 6 pack for $32.
PAFC. Forever.

LOOK OUT, WE'RE COMING!

The Annex Cafe

We went down to Glenelg yesterday for a few things. Before the places we needed to go opened, we walked around looking for somewhere nice for breakfast.

After a full up and down Jetty Rd, we saw The Annex Cafe down a side street. Walking in, the place looks nice. It wasn't too crowded, but we decided to sit out the front.

I ordered TWO eggs benny with halloumi, an iced latte, and a Green Goddess smoothie for Mrs HH3.

First, the drinks came out. The smoothie looked good, but the iced latte I'd ordered came out as an iced long black. Completely different drink. I couldn't be bothered going in because it was Sunday and I didn't feel like ruining my day if they gave me attitude back. If I'd ordered an iced long black, I would've been happy with it. It wasn't bad.

Then the MEAL comes out. They'd only charged me for one meal, and obviously only made one. The place was quiet, so the guy shouldn't have had a problem hearing. I went back inside and ordered another plate. When it was served, the waitress apologised, obviously realising what had happened without me having to point it out.

The meals weren't great. The eggs were ok, but served on something that resembled sour dough, that was barely toasted, so it had the texture of stale bread. The hollandaise was really salty. The spinach wasn't blanched at all. I ate the eggs but left the rest.

Food - Shit/10
Service - Shit/10
Atmosphere - Not bad/10

Will probably give it a miss next time we're down there.

BRKLYN on Rundle St.

Stopped in for a bev and a small feed before a Fringe show Saturday night.

Pastrami Reuben is the best I've had in Adelaide ($17, + $10 for a Brooklyn Lager and $14 for a Gin Cocktail).

Will be back to sample more.

Bamyan Hotel - Port Adelaide.

Now, upon walking into the place you would not think this is for you, you might feel out of place, it can only be described as "opulent persian" decor and the moment you walk in the spicy saffron filled air overwhelms you. This is authentic, all the way down to the big day bed / platform in the corner.

Don't think you're getting top notch table service here, it's no existent, as is the beer and wine, there isn't any and BYO ( although I was told it was ) which is not permitted. I took them out and skolled them at the car. ;)

The food though, the food!

I went the wings kebab, Mrs Boon the 3 mixed spit kebabs with some vine leafs and flat bread / naan.

The vine leafs, warm and oily, not the shit you get from a can on a platter at a BBQ, chewy leafs, warm filling, damn!

The wings, 3 skewers with 2 big wings on each were finger lickin' good. Awesome good. The mixed skewers ( chicken, lamb and lamb mince ) served with saffron rice, oh man, the rice!

The old pub has been completely transformed, the Afgahni Nanna ( I'm not sure of the term ) isn't super friendly, customer service isn't her game but cooking shit over coals is!

Our bill came to $35, I'd added it up, then when we approached the counter (well, called her to pay) she added it up (not well) and offered us "$27, ok?" as in "You happy with $27?". I said "No, no, $30 at least". "$27" was the counter offer, "$30 and no less", "You sure?". "Yes". She rang us up for $30.

If you poke your head in and don't like the look of it I understand, if you look in and nobody is there that wouldn't be a surprise, if you don't sit down and give it a go I'd suggest you may have missed out.

Food - 9.5/10
Service - 2/10
Value - 9/10

Don't be shy.

The Hotel Royal - Henley Beach Road

Got invited to join some friends there for dinner on Friday night. Carpark was full, so went down the road to the overflow carpark. There were big boxes of old VHS movies on the curb, so we had a rummage and got some decent ones.

We checked the sports bar to see how busy that was. Packed. So we moved into the bistro. Seated straight away. The three others, who all wear glasses, complained about the dim lighting, but I didn't mind it. #sightprivelage

Thought I'd be a bit of a baller, so told Mrs HH3 to rack up a bill. We ditched the specials menu. I went for the Kangaroo and Mrs HH3 went for the duck. The other two went for "Ragu" and S&P squid respectively.

Mrs HH3 went for an espresso martini, and I thought I'd be a fancy c**t and get one of the fancy rum cocktails.

We also indulged in half a dozen oysters kilpatrick.

The Kangaroo was good. Not the best I've had, but good. Mrs HH3 seemed to enjoy the duck. Didn't hear anything about the SPS, but the "Ragu" looked like something you'd throw together the night before you did the weekly shop. Macaroni, pepperoni, bolognaise looking sauce. BUT apparently it tasted alright.

For the two meals, two drinks, and oysters, the bill came to $104.50. Probably not worth the money, but didnt bother me too much.

Food - 7/10
Price - 2/10
Atmosphere - 8/10
Selection of classic 90's movies on the curb - 10/10

Score - 6.75/10

Royal always used to be decent food, not top shelf but well above average. That was many years ago though (although the lighting was still dim).

Pricing doesn't seem too bad with a rough guide:

2 x Mains $25 = $50
1 x Oysters = $17
1 x Espresso = $15
1 x Rum Cocktail = $15

OK slightly overs maybe, but not terrible I wouldn't think.

The fun police had been on to me about going out for brekky one day to the "Java Hut" in Gawler.

I'm not one to wanna spend on coffee or brekky when I have everything I need at home but I thought, oh well, I'll have a look.

The place was a bit no frills and poky but filled to the brim with patrons, it was 9:11am as we got attended to and asked if we had a booking, we didn't but the woman running it said "I usually give people 15 minutes but I'm going to back my instincts and assign you a reserved table".

I watched how autonomously everyone worked, there was two women around 40 and about 10 others from about 16 to 22, everyone had a job to do, everyone was busy and everyone was smiling.

We ordered the Big Breakfast between us and a large coffee each, the breakfast came with a generous amount of bacon, a gourmet sausage, two poached eggs, tomato and 4 halves of very thickly sliced toast, $20 all up, I had to admit that it was worth the trip.

As we ate I noticed a bloke sitting on the next table had something that looked pretty appetizing so I asked him what it was, "The Doorstop" he answered.

So sure enough, come Sunday morning we rang through and booked a table so we could try the Doorstop, we opted for the mega coffee this time.

The Doorstop was bacon, cheese, fried egg and tomato on a foccachia x 2, it was more than enough for the two of us and with the mega cappucino's it came in at $21.

The menu looks awesome and we plan on trying everything on it.
The service was brilliant, a well organized place.
The atmosphere was abuzz for the time of day.
I wouldn't bother trying to go there on a weekend without a reservation, at least a dozen groups got turned away yesterday in the twenty minutes we were there.

All round 9.5 for all facets.
