Melbourne Cup

Wasn't sure if this needed to go in the Gambling room (Mods feel free to move obviously), but my questions are more about the day itself.

Interested or not interested? Who takes the day(s) off? Who goes along to a function and if so where and what do you get for your $$ etc?

The wife's work meet at Morphetville for the day as part of their normal day, free piss and food for the day too.

I've put in for the day off for the first time, I'll either try and scab in with them, go by myself and meet her in there or we'll go to a luncheon somewhere that has a good deal.

Seemed the all-inclusive food and bevy pub packages were harder to find this year

Not sure about the piss but the Para Hills Community Club is usually very popular on the day.

Used to be before the field was made up of refugees.
Don't miss the gongbeaters lining up to collect while the fields still passing the post & you want to get on the next at Eagle Farm.
Be a lot easier with phone betting now I would think.

I dont care much really, but some at work will go out for lunch and there done for the day.

One of our many managers last year went out for lunch and didnt cancel or moved his afternoon meetings. He just rocked up back at the office about 4pm loaded as all ****. At 4.10pm he was sent home as he was unable to function. Not sure how you actually get that ****** up from about lunch time to 4pm but it was funny.

An older colleague and I had something a bit similar a few years back.

We went to the pub around the corner at 11:30 to place everyone's bets, he asked if I wanted a pint so I obliged, I returned the favour only to be charged $4 for the two pints, he seen this and gave me some money to buy the next round to see if the same thing occurred and sure enough it did.

After that it became a bit of a game as the next round I wasn't even charged, we ended up staying there for a while and then had to rush back as the race wasn't far away from starting, we were ticking over a bit and trying to be as quiet as possible to sneak under the radar.

Now whenever Melbourne Cup is mentioned we just look at each other and have a bit of an internal laugh, he's a very straight laced man who thinks I lead him astray at times, this time it was his fault.

Used to book the day off every year without fail- head to a local at about 9am and park ourselves for the day.

Sadly, I dont get into the build up anywhere near as much now, and pub promos on the day are much crappier. Drink 'specials' are also piss weak these days.

I'll make a few calls now to see if any lads are up for it though :)

Agreed. Far too many international raiders coming in to take the cash, having said that we don't value the distance races enough here in Australia and if we want to keep the Cup and the money here then we need to increase the amount of distance races we have during the Autumn and then in the early parts of spring.

I'd like to see a Cup King, call it the Cummings Cup, for a horse that can win the Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne Cups.

Attended Let's Elope's Cup win in 1991 - 'Fairstar' Melbourne Cup Cruise :)

I have to work EVERY year - I have usually managed to highjack a TV to watch the race over the years, however 4 years ago & managed to get a 50" Flat Screen on the wall in my room, but the BEST wrought was getting a Digital Arial installed (cost more than the TV), for the express purpose of accessing the LIVE Coverage, in HD, in my room every 1st Tuesday in November! My room is the ONLY room in the place with access to the Cup! I tend to have Racing.com on all day (with the sound down), hot-spot through my phone to access Sportsbet, Ubet & Ladbrokes accounts. Is that wrong? ;) 8)
BTW, I now also watch the NFL coverage on 7mate too.

I'll be in the Virgin lounge at Brisbane Airport. I'll Park my arse early in the morning at Northcliffe SLSC and get the bus to the airport around 12 to come home. We leave at 3pm local time so I'll get it before I board!
