I think it is inevitable and for most people nothing will change.
From memory, the models for a republic all had the current pompous gits replaced by a local pompous git.
I think if it eventuates, a nobody should get a crack at privilege and position. How about an annual Tax File Number draw? Winner gets to open bridges, host garden parties and swill champers etc for 12 months. It's only a ceremonial position after all.

I don't think it will ever happen until there is bipartisan support
Putting a divisive person like the red bandana in charge has already ostracised a good portion of the population.
The politicians dont want a popularly elected HOS because it may undermine their power so they want to select who it is.
Also; the Australian psych would probably see Paul Hogan nominated and elected (Still a better option than below)
Which is more dysfunctional: the Queen or the current crop of politicians? (You can include State politicians as well)
The personal stability provided by the Queen will soon disappear but the crap politicians in Australia remain
I want a republic but won't vote for it if there is even a poofteenth chance that Paul Keating is the HOS

In other words: Good luck. I'm not saying other people would agree with me on the above but the HOS appears to be the main sticking point for a lot of people

Some evidence now that the baby boomers represented peak support for a Republic, it just doesn't get any traction with most people, younger people no exception.
But it will be revived, as recently as the last election Bill Shorten had his plan.

Having an Australian as the Australian HoS would be a big one for me. There are many worthy people. (I.e. it definitely wouldn't go to someone involved in politics.)

Also, not having someone automatically inherit the position from their parent.

Well I guess that where you and I differ (not problem with that) but I couldn't care less if the Union Jack is on the Australian flag. Like it or Loathe it our history is, we were colonized by the British. It's a fact.

It's flag, its a symbol, that's all. Bit like the national anthem, I not that fussed what it is, again its symbolic. Just like the Queen is our HOS (well the Governor General is I think, technically as the queens representative) again - symbolic or ceremonial duties only.

Ask any average American, Indian, Frenchman.... they see Australia as a country unto itself, and while we have colonial roots.... we really don't dance to the tune of the queen.

As best as I can see the whole Republican debate, is a waste of money.... what would change (flag, anthem, HOS) aside... and what difference would that make to the average Australian, and importantly how Australia is viewed on the world stage?

I don't want a public holiday on the first weekend in July, way too cold to do anything useful then.
