Asthma

Postby MJP1993 » Thu Dec 16, 2021 2:27 pm

Ok this might be hard to follow . I’ve been coughing having issues went to see my GP . GP says I don’t have asthma it’s something like asthma .
Put me on an Atrovent puffer four times a day two puffs . Last appointment changed it for a week to four times a day four puffs then back to two puffs four times a day . When I explained Wednesday last week visiting aged care then paperwork into Centrelink. Coughing really badly at Centrelink people thought I had the plague or something .
Anyway back to GP today explained everything again I’m having issues in heat ect ,
So it’s gone from not asthma to something like asthma to seasonal asthma.
Seeing a cardiologist Tuesday morning to be sure it’s not my heart ,
I told my GP 2 years ago I couldn’t see my GP another clinic another GP who told me when I was wheezing and losing my voice I was a diabetic asthmatic smoker he also tried to say I use drugs and drink to much alcohol told me to take codral cold and flu tablets . I went through that to get a sick certificate for Centrelink.
I explained this to my GP and I haven’t smoked a cigarette in 27/28 years !

Now do people who suffer asthma go through this getting treatment
My GP won’t send me to a respiratory specialist until the cardiologist says it’s not my heart
My GP listened to my deep breathing said I wasn’t getting much air in.
Forgot I’m now on two puffers one to prevent one to restore
I hope that makes sense

As a kid, I was a shocking asthmatic. Died once (no joke, stopped breathing and heart stopped in a doctors surgery, resuscitated in hospital luckily). At the time I got told that I was lucky I was fit otherwise I wouldn't have made it.

That's lead me on a course of trying to stay as fit as possible - not always possible given injuries, age, etc. So I think I can talk from experience. Anyway....

Asthma is tough. My son was 1 when he was suffering symptoms of what I thought was asthma. Turned out, he would only get asthma after getting sick - ie a head cold. That's not typically 'asthma'. Despite my son going through the 120 breaths per minute on the way to the Womens and Childrens, I sided with the doctors to start with when they treated him with asthma medication but said he wasn't asthmatic. I remember pleading with the doctors (stupidly) to put him on asthma preventative as we had him admitted maybe 9 times over the course of a winter. Now I look back and say the doctors were right in saying that he wasn't asthmatic. We pushed them into allowing him to have preventative, wrongly.

Asthma can be triggered by random things. For me, as a kid it was triggered by fruit cup cordial - I was the only one allowed milk at kindy. I found out years later that it was the preservatives in the cordial that did it. Still to this day, it does. Having a bourbon and coke in a premix does it too. Cut grass used to do it for me as well. Pollen does it too. What this results in, is breathing 'up and down'. Not necessarily just shortness of breath (hence your doctor possibly saying you need your heart checked). That sounds odd but if you watch yourself breath, you breath with your chest, 'in and out'. Breathing up and down means you are heaving for air, even standing still. Your diaphragm moves up and down rather than in and out. Traditional medication alleviates the need to breath up and down and returns you to breathing - in and out.

As you can see from above, this didn't equate with a trigger that my son suffered from. He used to take ventolin on occasion but has weened himself off. During illnesses he still gets chest issues - Croup which leads to asthma type symptoms but not asthma itself.

So in short, go with the specialists. It doesn't sound like you've got asthma. But ultimately it doesn't matter whether you've got it or not, as long as you're treated according to your symptoms and you get relief.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Ok so todays visit to SA heart cardiologist ( I went there in 2013 told I had Cushings Disease but I didn’t ). So I had a ECG and my BP was checked . My GP took my BP two weeks ago it was 128/84 today was 130/80.
Then I saw the cardiologist answered his questions yes I used to smoke stopped 27/28 years ago,
Asked me about chest pain do I wheeze yep when I’m coughing .
Do I wake up at night shortness of breath I said some mornings at 2/3am I wake up coughing
He asked about during the shower no issue some after some 5 to 10 minutes later .
Chest pain I said yes but not like in the movies
He did check my breathing deep breaths through my mouth when I finished I had a coughing fit and used my puffer .
His decision I need a lung specialist and I have asthma .
Now my heart I’m going back January 11 for a scan . Told it takes 40 minutes. Been decades since my last scan . Way back whenever it was I was under a professor of cardiology across from the QEH. Had thickening of the left ventricle lost weight it improved.

So I’m still confused I’ll see my GP Jan 6 see who she sends me to next .
Today was supposed to cost me $240 get all but $90 back Cardiologist charged it fully to Medicare thankfully

Ok just an update seeing my GP Thursday and cardiologist again next Tuesday.
At my volunteering for jobseeker job I had a really bad coughing fit . Before that I had people jokingly saying there’s nothing wrong with you .
The boss told me the cough wasn’t good while I used my puffer .
Still sounding like I’m losing my voice .

Ok just a quick update seeing my GP Wednesday inhalers aren’t really working or any different to the lady lot.
Now I’ve seen the cardiologist had an ecg my heart was fine the walls were thick . I got the standard you drink to much alcohol. I answered honestly I don’t drink alcohol. So the cardiologist blamed my BP. Because I still got chest pain was booked in for a stress test yesterday .
So Wednesday at my volunteering job I tripped over hit my good knee right wrist and chin .
Was sat down for 30 minutes was given a cuppa . Asked for my Ventolin I was losing my voice and had chest pain . Thursday was a day at home went out did a few things had chest pain at home sitting doing nothing . Friday did a few things in the morning went to the cardiologist appointment in the afternoon. Sitting in the waiting room chest pain could’ve been due to it being really warm . Anyway I survived the stress test felt like I’d run the marathon. Anyway the cardiologist who over saw the test said your heart is fine but your a smoker . Me not since I was 31 almost 28 years ago .

So I’m still waiting on the lung specialist in February. Physical activity takes it of me . I have coughing fits basically lose my voice .
I will get there !

Ok now my GP said this week it’s Emphysema . Using Seretide 500 mg twice morning and night plus Ventolin. Until Tuesday it’s 6 puffs of Ventolin every 4 hours and I think from Tuesday it’s two puffs every four hours . Still seeing specialist February 10. So good to know my heart is ok couldn’t help and hate being told I drink to much alcohol and it has caused thickening of the heart walls when I said I don’t drink oh ok your BP is causing it second cardiologist said stress test showed no blockage but I’m a smoker me haven’t smoked for 28 years . So I guess my misspent youth of cigarettes has caught up with me 28 years later lung specialist will tell me more .

Thanks gadj1976 seeing the lung specialist February 10 who should tell me exactly what’s wrong . I know cardiologist number 1 wasn’t happy I’m waiting until then and was going to contact the lung specialist. I look at it this way it’s faster than the public hospital system still on a three year waiting list to get on a list to get my bakers cyst drained already had a SA health doctor tell me I’ll never see a specialist for my knee .
So I’m finding money to see specialists cardiologist fully charged Medicare seeing I’m on jobseeker that was good mind you the stress test felt like I’d run a marathon. And I was told your a smoker anyway I’ll get there . And not for 28 years have I smoked !

Ok update saw the Thoracics specialist today . Was going to have the breathing test or told I was . Instead specialist checked my chest said I don’t have COPD or smokers cough pretty certain I have asthma . Now no breathing test yet had a blood test today next month I’m having a cat scan on my chest straight after I’m having my breathing test then see the specialist.
Specialist did give me a script for Spiro puffer . So I’m to keep using Seretide morning and night Spiro morning and only use Ventolin if I need to . So I’ll be using when I’m volunteering ect I find I need to then .
So I’m still confused but I guess I’m getting there we won’t mention the specialist didn’t bulk bill I’m getting al bar $60 back and if I didn’t have a concession card would’ve cost me $70 more ( after the cardiologist same specialist building bulk billed Medicare )

I had my cat scan and breath tests today
Going onto another inhaler off of 2
But all the tests show I don’t have asthma
Still cough voice still goes like I’m a teenager or losing it
Specialist is giving me 3 months on new inhaler then sending me to ENT specialist

I’m confused as heck want to swear WTF do I have

Ok was seeing my GP today for other reasons . We spoke about this and I was told to let the Thoracics specialist rule out everything. Then my GP will take it from there and send me to a ENT specialist.
Oh the months I sat in the ENT at the RAH after my brain injury. Oh well I’ll get there .
