19. Payne Stewart's plane crash
18. AFL 05/06 Grand Finals
17. Sydney to Hobart 1998 — the fatal storm
16. Susie Maroney's Cuba to Florida swim
15. Alan Langer's Origin comeback
14. Nadia Comaneci and her 'Perfect 10'
13. John Mclean — the paraplegic who swam the English channel
12. Cathy Freeman's 2000 Sydney Olympics win
11. Rugby World Cup - 1991 & 2003
10. Lance Armstrong
9. Nikki Lauda's crash
8. The Ashes 2005
7. Ted Whitten's lap of honour
6. Golfer Jack Newton's accident
5. Torville and Dean's perfect scores
4. Liverpool FC - Hillsborough Crush
3. Kieren Perkins' 1500m swim
2. Pat Cash wins Wimbledon in 1987
1. Australia at the World Cup
Now, I know its subjective but surely the 1983 America's cup triumph would fit in there before at least half of those, I thought it was a glaring ommision?

Yep definately # one in the tragedies stakes, especially as it is a tragedy that some people actually rate this in a sporting sense (see my earlier comments)....![]()

I'm with you Wedge man even though it was 23 years ago and the events subsequent to some of the main players, but I can not recall a sporting event (possibly bar the Sydney Olympics) that more unified us as a nation and created such a massive feeling of euphoria.

I wasnt around back then, but i find that hard to belive, wasnt it on in the middle of the night and most people just woke up and found out Australia won? But with the WC it was 2 weeks long everyone was talking about it for weeks leading into it and after it, it not only United the country in victory but in defeat as well, it was pretty unreal the way it did that, i have many memories (blurred by beer) from that, that will stay with me for life i find it hard to belive anything came close to doing that like the WC did, but like i said i wasnt around then, im just making assumptions.
