whinging about water restrictions? Spare a thought...

Just had a week of hollies and ventured out to TM1980 country (thats Horsham for the uninitiated) for a few days to catch up with some mates.

Now I've been travelling that way for almost 10 years now and get used to seeing the country a bit brown, but the trip over this time was a real eye opener...

These guys are really doing it tough, the Wimmera River is nothing more than a green murky puddle (thats the river under the bridge you cross over after the big roundabout passing through horsham) and they're on level 4 water restrictions which means no watering of lawns whatsoever or washing cars (only windscreens and windows from a bucket). Gardenbeds/potplants can be watered, again only from a bucket/watering can, my mates were using recycled shower and washing machine water to do this... hoses are out of the question.

Even the usually lush city oval is reduced to almost a brown patch and most of the footy ovals look like nothing more than hard brown prickle patches. I was speaking to the ex-coach of one of the district league teams over there and he said that things are that bad, that only 3 of the 11 ovals will be playable on next year if they dont get any rain.

No rain obviously means no crops which means no money coming into the clubs for subs/sponsorship etc...

Even the Stawell Gift is at risk of being moved if they dont get rain.

What doesnt help is that the states water supplys are being gulped up by the efforts to extinguish the fires in the north east of the state, the water carriers (elvis and the like) are sucking dams dry (if they werent already)

So next time you're having a whinge about only being able to water every 2nd day or whatever, spare a thought for those for whom water is fast becoming a luxury...

Perhaps TM could shed some more light on exactly how bad the situation is over there...

lets face it the world is full of 'em... if they're not complaining about something, then they will definitely find something to complain/whinge about. Also whinging is something we all do and a lot of us are guilty and/or selfish enough to complain when there is always someone worse off than you in most situations.. its often easier to whinge than to take a step out of yourself and think about/consider others..... as i said in the subject line... i dont let these a holes get to me, - let's face it they are everywhere and if we take on board all the dicks' comments/complaints etc we would all end up as frustrated, selfish and self absorbed as they are... A wise person once told me "Remember you can't control what others say to you, you only have control over how you REACT to their comments, behavours etc" :D

I would have to pay that, hopefully we can cure that with another win over North. :D

i live in canberra but just 90kms up the road towards sydney is the city of GOULBURN. they are on water restrictions stage 6.

no washing cars, lucky to water once a week for gardens but by water can only. no ovals to be watered which stops the kids to play on. insurances have been taken out against kids hurting themselves on some ovals because they are ROCK hard.

some sports teams have gone into recess because of the ovals. they even have restrictions on household water. if you use too much you get a warning , do it again and they cut your water OFF!!!

All in the meantime we had a massive flooding near the Maid and Magpie today because of an old cast iron water pipe burst pouring enuff water to fill a few swimming pools. SAwater should cop a fine for lack of upgrading services.

Yeah FC she bloody dry here, Nhill is fortunate in that we have our own water supply that is pretty stable (artesian bore) that we are only on stage 1 restrictions hence we can still water gardens but only at night and cars can get washed. However we'll probably go on to stage 2 before the end of summer.

Mind you everynight I take the kids bath water outside and water the garden and with a two bucket system we try to get half the washing machine water at the end of the wash and soak cycle.

Some farmers over here now haven't had an nett income producing crop for five years so more will walk off the land this year. Very low yields for crops this year and poor quality grain really only good for feed, hmm how's that gong to effect city prices for bread and cereals next year.....

No cereal crops to export will compromise Australia's balance of trade figures as export $$$ decrease putting further pressure on iinterest rates which once again will affect city dwellers

Ararat shocked me last week (FC you know how green Ararat ususally is) 1 hr west of Ballarat in the foothills of the Grampians, noramlly a freezing wet place, obviously on phase four water restrictions hence all the council gardens are brown when noramally they are a mass of colour and greenery.

Working in a health service we have had to up our drought relief and counselling services as farmers go to the wall and families start to feel the strain.

Two kids in town have got apprenticehips last week but 3 hours away in ballarat so there's two more incomes leaving town, they'll play footy for Nhill still but the club has to pay them for petrol rather than some other recruits thereby affecting the clubs ability to attract more players. Can see more people leaving the area further reducin the economic viability of businesses in town. A major employer in town is desperate for water and if it can't get more it will have to cut production once again reducing the income in the town. Two businesses in town have closed down in the past three months and more are rumoured to close

Footy clubs around here will really struggle for B grade teams next year and as FC mentioned some people will opt not to play as the grounds will be so hard and the injury risk will increase.

Yep she is a brown old country over here at the minute ans the smoke from fires 500 km away was shocking here in Nhill on Sunday, tough times ahead for the Wimmera but the sun will rise tomorrow and each time the sun rises we are another day closer to rain.....

My mates live at the top of the hill in Stawell which normally you can see the town centre from (about 300-400m from the main street) and on saturday the smoke was that thick we couldnt see the town centre. The next door neighbour was over for lunch on saturday , when all of a sudden we heard his smoke alarm go off. He raced home only to find it was the smoke in the air that had set it off...thats how bad it was.

They were saying on the news over there land burnt in fires in the north east and gippsland was equivalent to 98,000 MCG's...

you notice it even more going up on a plane lately, but everything was a lot more dead and dry driving to Gosford a few weeks ago than it was earlier in the year.
