Vote of Confidence for Rob Gerard

I am bitterly disappointed in the lack of support for Rob Gerard from our state politicians.
The support he has given to SA football/basketball/soccer/ and sport and arts in general in this state deserves better.
I call on politicians of both parties to stand up and be counted on this matter.

The poor bloke will end up as big a martyr as Joan of Arc.

If no one else will say it I will: "Thanks Rob"

Have deliberately avoided reading about the Hoopla currently going on concerning him, his contributions throughout this state have been generous and first class .. I'll say thanks to Mr Gerard too!!

It's also good to see supporters of other clubs recognise what a great job Robert Gerrard has done for not only North, but sport in SA in general.

You've gotta be kidding me?

Gerard is political poison at the moment.

Just ask Mr. Costello.

I agree magpiespower.

How about a ticker-tape parade through the city? Perhaps a knighthood for services to the tax planning industry?

Doesn't mean he deserves to be in that position. He has not been found guilty of a bluddy thing.
As for the RBA job he was definately more qualified than me and probably you, and got the job on merit.
If Fatguts spent more time coming up with policies that would work he wouldn't need to stoop to this crap.

Got the job on merit, spiritof64?

I'm sure he did, but donating millions to the chief selectors probably didn't hurt his chances.

BTW could North's ad have been any suckier?

Rob Gerard is a businessman (a successfull one too), not the Treasurer in charge of the State Budget. What have you put back into the community, Tipsy Cauldron?

How many South Australians has he employed? It would be in the tens of thousands. I'm sure they appreciate his employment of them. Has put a lot more back into the community than some other businessmen

It does if that position is on the board of the Reserve Bank of Australia where you are supposed to be beyond reproach.

Can sense some good old-fashioned parochialism in this thread.

Since when has that been a bad thing MP? If you keep turning the other cheek to the east coasters you'll have to take your balaclava off for the next two slaps.

What's interesting was the unsuitable tenure as Liberal Party Treasurer unlike the Reserve Bank gig.

Uh-oh, there's that siege mentality again.

So Gerard's dumping was another plot by those dastardly easterners was it?

Please.

I posted a similar thread on rocket rooster, but it somehow or other got deleted.

The Advertiser (and today's Sunday Mail) have been VERY kind to Mr Gerard, whereas the interstate papers (in particular the Financial Review) have been far more scathing.

Yes, granted, Mr Gerard does employ many South Australians, and yes, he is a very big sponsor of many of the sports that I love, including footy & car racing, so a big tick from me for that, and yes I wish he barracked for the Bays and not North.

But to quote the Financial Review on December 8
"...allegations of international tax avoidance involving hundreds of millions of dollars, the use of sham companies set up in tax havens deliberately contrived to deceive the tax commisioner, false and misleading statements made to tax officers and the hindering of the tax officers. All of these alleged offences are indictable under the Commonwealth law. So let there be no confusion, these are the most serious offences a tax auditor will encounter....."

And to quote the Weekend Australian of last weekend
"...Mr Gerard has been a generous benefactor to many causes in SA..." "But the little people of South Australia have, in turn, been quite generous towards Mr Gerard's companies"...According to the Weekend Australian "Gerard Industries received 21 State Government support packages worth $6.35 million between 1981 and 2002, including $2.5 million for a $20 million factory expansion in Strathalbyn. The company has since repaid $4.4 million after failling to reach targets
"

Just thinking aloud, why are the journalists at the Advertiser (particular Rex Jory) so gushing in their complete and utter praise of Gerards?
