This was an unusually famous date in South Australian history.
Some fraud predicted a massive tidal wave/earthquake would hit Adelaide.
The prediction caused some panic in SA and in fact people left
the state and actually moved interstate out of fear.
The doomsday prediction was a fallacy.
Donald Dunstan the flamboyant Premier was beachside on the day
drinking champagne with his mates.

I remember the day vividly, I was never ever peturbed by the prediction.
I was a teenager and was working as a brickies labourer.
I can remember telling the boss I wanted a crapp, went to my car and
listened to a trotting race and backed a winner called Dillon something.

Despite only being 5 I remember it, I lived in some flats on Stonehouse Avenue at Camden Park and I can remember standing outside with some mates waiting for the water to come flooding up the road so we could go for a swim.

we (my brother & i with the old man) went down there (mosely square) my brother got don dunstans autograph & i remember my dad saying this is impossible because of the mass of water needed for a tidal wave & it cant happen in a gulf like this (he is a teacher) & the other most vivid memory is the amount of people with surf boards waiting to surf the wave

I got well and truly conned by my Mother. That Jan 76 day I was on school holidays and was having a nothing day at home. Was watching whatever was on tv that day and fell asleep in the arvo. When I woke up, my Mother was stirring me up, saying that she couldn't believe how I had slept thru the earth tremor that happened right on the predicted moment of the major earthquake/tidal wave. There was no tidal wave or any major damage, but there was a minor rumble.For the next few hours I was devastated how I had missed out on the excitement of experiencing an earth tremor - wasn't until my Father came home from work and gave me weird looks about my earth tremor comments that I realised that my Mother had set me up beautifully...

Being a mere 4 months old my recollection of the incident is less than creditable.I do however remember my Mum telling me of a couple of guys sitting on the corner of Henley Beach and Tapleys Hill Rd's in a rubber dinghy pointing towards the city,waiting for the wave to ride it into town.One of the troopers had a pirate hat and sword standing on the front of the dinghy in apparent anticipation of a charge up Henley beach Rd into the city.

Being only 3 I don't recall it. But for Christmas I got that 'Moments in Time' photo book - I think there's a pic of the Don at Glenelg waving from a balcony to an angry mob carrying 'The End of the World is Nigh' placards

Spent the day playing cricket with my next door neighbours. Their mum came outside when the "time of judgement" came to tell us the time had arrived. We stopped. All was normal. So we continued with our game of cricket.
The guy who predicted it (I can't remember his name) moved inland and the town he moved to had one years worth of rain in one day and had flash floods

How good is that book? I scored a copy from my old man late last year. Made an old croweater very homesick.

It's not in the photo but there was also guys at Glenelg in dinner suits with snorkels and flippers.

his name is nash (not sure of christian name perhaps john but as i said not sure but definately his surname is nash)
