TV/Radio Ratings Periods

No doubt most people are hanging out for the ratings period to start again.

Can someone please explain how it is that ratings are not year round? I think it's a disgrace that the public have to put up with the fact that it cant anticipate the media striving every week to please its customers and viewers. I know that there are a few good shows that surface in the 'off' season but even so.

Imagine if in your job you only had to put in during certain periods of the year? You get a 2 or 3 month break at Christmas and a few weeks off at different times during the year - generally in school holidays! And imagine being able to be on time for some but not everyone in the same way as non-eastern seaboard states have to watch "live' events on delay - eg the tennis recently!

Who sets rating periods, when they start and finish etc, and what is the motive behind less than 52 weeks per period?

dont get me started on the validity of ratings figures tho - that's another topic altogether!

Tangentially, one of the blokes I commute with has just had a ratings black box installed on his telly.

I have suggested that he leave the telly turned on, tuned into non-existent channels, to add a bit more noise to the data.
