LIVING IN THE UK

G'day All

I'm moving to London in about 8 weeks and would appreciate any advice, tips, experiences etc that anyone would like to share.

Dogwatcher has offered some assistance with regards to the best places live/places to avoid which gave me the idea of putting this thread up - thanks mate!

Anyone got any ideas/experiences on the best/worst places to live? (I want to find an area where my wife can feel safe walking home from the tube station, on a budget of up to 220 quid per week)

Any experiences on must see places/places to avoid would also be appreciated.

Cheers in advance!

Cheers so far fellas - usefull stuff there.

That's funny RE: Brixton. I've heard that Peckham is the 'South Central Cali' of London and is usually on fire. Brixon isn't too far from Peckham so I'll give that one a big miss!!! TAB or no TAB!!!

And yeah Lords is high up on the list of must do's. Gotta convince the wife to stick around until 2009 for the Ashes!!! Fat chance getting tickets to Lords though I guess!

and for a man that loves a beer the "Lords Taverner" right next to the ground is a mighty fine watering hole!!!

1981 there was riots there
I was staying in Southall at the time
Actually walked through Brixton in the daytime, didnt notice anything.
The locals eventually briefed me on the area.

As Mary Hopkins once sang THOSE WERE THE DAYS.

LOL!

I lived in Peckham and neighbouring Lewisham for a bit.

Believe it or not, I can honestly say that I didn't have any troubles there.

But yes, South London does have a bad rep.

YOU WHAT?

Just don't expect to take a photo of the blessed urn. Earlier this year they banned the taking of photos. Really makes me wish I'd gone to see the thing when it was in Adelaide late last year!

A group of us at uni have been planning to spend about two years teaching in the UK in 2009-2010. We probably didn't really take the idea too seriously until we remembered the Ashes will be on in England in 2009. Thats all the convincing we needed.

Even with the stupidly high cost of living in England, we will be getting $1430 a week as a supply teacher.

PAFC - let me know when you want to teach in the UK. I work for teaching agencies in the UK and can give you sme contacts that will make us both money.

Ahhh I like it - mutual back scratching.

Now, if only I can convince my missus (a teacher) to head to the UK for a year.

From what I hear, we should sign up with three agencies. We had one come to our uni yesterday, absolutely stunning Kiwi chick did the presentation, she could have sold us anything!!!
