That's ******* scary - Mrs ZZ and I were pushing ZZ Jnr around the Torrens this afternoon and as we were going up and down a few hills near the zoo we noted how it would be fairly easy to lose control of a pram in certain sections. Then we turned on the radio and heard the news. Man, it really came as a jolt and I hope the little tacker pulls through.

Terribly sad if that is the case mr66. Seems so wasteful and unnecessary (without knowing any circumstances).

Bub is still in critical condition from news reports. Anne Moran's idea to put nets in the Torrens is ridiculous reactionary polly-waffle however.

Agreed - couldn't people just be careful with their kids? I appreciate accidents can happen but after the last one, surely walking the bubs around the torrens makes you think about how careful you need to be (just like you mentioned zipper)?

A 10-month-old baby girl has died in hospital after her stroller rolled into the River Torrens at Walkerville yesterday afternoon.

The baby's family maintained a bedside vigil at the Women's and Children's Hospital for the critically ill baby but she died about 10am, a police spokesman said.

Holden Hill CIB and Major Crime detectives are continuing investigations into how the pram rolled into the river. A report is being prepared for the state coroner.

At the time of the accident, the baby was being pushed along a walking track near Burlington St, Walkerville, about 2.30pm, by a woman believed to be her grandmother. She was treated for shock in the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Police said the pram rolled down the bank into the water and the woman jumped into the river after it.

The freak accident mirrors a similar incident on December 15, when five-month-old Leonardo Legrand died after being trapped in his stroller when it rolled into the River Torrens at Hackney.

Following that tragedy - less than 2km from yesterday's incident - there were calls by councils and community groups for safety measures for the banks of the Torrens, but no action has been taken.

It is understood the relative lost consciousness as she attempted to rescue the baby yesterday.

A female passerby helped free the baby and get her to shore.

"I just jumped in to try and help them," the passerby said.

"I pulled the little baby out."

Police officers performed CPR on the baby until ambulance crews arrived.

Paramedics continued CPR as the baby was rushed to the Women's and Children's Hospital, where she was in a critical condition.

Last night, Major Crime detective Brian Swan and Chief Inspector Ian McDonald were at the scene with police divers and relatives of the baby girl trying to determine the chain of events.

Late yesterday, police door-knocked homes overlooking the area where the pram went into the water.

Very very sad news, my heart goes out to the family. The grandmother would be hysterical and probably the mother and father would be feeling hatred and blame on her, not good.
