"Bumping" Old Topics

Postby Wedgie » Sun May 20, 2007 9:21 pm

Howdy guys, the mods and Site Admin have decided we don't want old topics bumped up to the top as it clutters up the latest news and we feel that if you want to refer to a previous thread it should be easy enough to create a new topic or commenting on a current topic both using a link to the older topic if it helps your point.
It also lets potential trolls who might want to clutter up the board with old topics just by making replies that this will not be tolerated.
Thank you for your time.

Wedgie. :D

OK - I had occasionally wondered whether it was better to start a new thread or to revive an old one rather than finish up with several old threads on closely related topics eventually. I'm happy to go either way. Perhaps threads untouched after a certain time could be deleted??

Agree with the rationale behind the idea, but also think a time frame needs to be put on it - last post more than 2 weeks ago, 1 month ago? Deleting the original topic limits the ability to link as wedgie suggested in his post.

Added thought - perhaps the threads can be locked once they hit the agreed age?

agreed on the use by date but maybe longer than 2 weeks.

i know MAL and a few others always brings up someones post for verification on things.
and now that ive been throwing in a few quizzes from all the PM"S im getting 2 weeks might not be enough time for answering these

Can we make an exception to the Sturt Renaissance thread? If not, let's just make it a sticky.

I agree Smac. No point in deleting them as sometimes they contain information I like to refer back on. If they are locked we can still quote them and link to them so that sounds like the obvious solution to me.

Definately will not be deleting any topics because of their age, I love the historical aspect of forums so you can go back and see old topics.
Locking them is pointless to, people just need to adhere to the rules, and have a look at how many topics there has been on this site, we would have to employ someone full time to lock them all!

Sometimes it's good to drag up an old thread to  someone who made some huge call that later turned out to be a huge clanger

eg .. Sturt's 'renaissance'

(only stirring ... but you know what I am getting at)
In between signatures .....

Ahaa! and what if the afore mentioned clanger should turn out to be correct in the context of the entire season? Should we be depriving people the right to laugh loudest? Perhaps there needs to be a "first page" rule, where provided the topic never leaves the first page it can in theory stay there forever.

Considering the events of the past 24 hours, its probably not a matter of "should" old topics be removed, but "how" and "after how long"

Im no expert on the subject, but to avoid another meltdown, the sooner the better i say... i'm happy with however you go about it...
