well it was either that or die, I'd be too scared to do it in case I mauled it too much and could'nt stop the the bleeding

He was only there for 11 hours. You think you'd at least wait a bit and cut your leg off as a last resort.

Yeah I'd certainly be having a go at the tree first. If he could cope with the pain of cutting his leg off, spending three or four extra hours cutting a tree with a pocket knife (which was obviously sharp enough due to it's ability to severe his leg) should be a breeze!
