We want to adopt an adult dog

Postby Sploosh » Sun Jun 24, 2007 8:11 pm

My wife and I have moved into a new house, with a small back yard. We would prefer a small adult (12 months or over) dog, so it isn't so active/destructive/noisy. We're looking for suggestions on which breeds of dog are quiet, happy to mainly sit and wait for us if we're not home. Also, any suggestions for alternatives to the RSPCA/animal welfare shelters? Those places are fantastic, but they haven't seemed to have any smaller/quieter dogs the two times we've visited them.

Keep your eye on the websites Sploosh:

http://www.animalwelfare.com.au/

http://www.adoptapet.com.au/

Always being updated with new dogs. Definitely the most rewarding places to get a pet from. If you're patient the right dog will come along.

PS - Good to see you're back in Adelaide. Been to any Roosters games yet? Your name has been mentioned on the Roost! You have been missed on gameday by the regulars.

Hey, I bet you didnt think about a greyhound did you?
I got a couiple of old greyhound pets.
They are lazy, they are clean and they are quiet.
Believe me, they don't need big spaces to run in, and would rather watch the footy on tv than do anything active.
Theres an adoption program with GRSA.

I agree- gatting an ex-racing dog would be a smart move.
It would be 4-5 years old, they are very placid/lazy, used to laying around in kennells all day (would appreciate a backyard of any size), they are also very loving & friendly & great with kids.
Do it Sploosh, you won't regret it- & you'll be doing a good deed also (a lot of these dogs go to doggy heaven too early...)

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. The greyhound idea was one that I'd never have considered, and reading that website, I realised that some of my 'stereotypical' images of greyhounds weren't correct. However, given our small backyard, and the fact the we're in a strata situation with nervous/noise-sensitive neighbours, we found a small 2 year old Jack Russell X today at the animal welfare place that we spotted on the net (as linked by R_R). Really happy with him so far, 6 hours in. We've been on walks, trying to train him to pee in the right places etc. First dog I've ever had, but my wife is a dog person through and through.

Thanks all for your help. Oh, and I haven't been to a Roosters game yet, but am keen to get there asap, but still gotta use weekends to get the house/things for it/arrangements etc more settled at the moment.

Go Roosters, and Go Rio (dog's name)

Great work Sploosh. Hope it all works out well with the Dog. I'm sure it will.

Re: We want to adopt an adult dog

Postby Aerie » Wed Jun 27, 2007 1:43 am

My folks recently got a dog from the RSPCA. It was one of those from up in the hills (Euchunga I think?) where those weirdos had hundreds of them and they were badly treated. I think some of them even turned to eating each other because of no feed. It was in the news or on Today Tonight or something...

Anyway, I reckon it's a great dog, but I only visit about once a fortnight. They made the mistake of letting it inside and it has since ripped up some of the lino and completely destroyed the futon. It broke it's leg within a week of them having it (god knows how) so they were up for some pretty expensive vet bills, plus they had to hire a cage to restrict its movement at the vets request and were supposed to keep it in there for 8 weeks! Impossible! That drove the dog and them mad as it's still a puppy so has bundles of energy. The leg has recently healed enough to allow them to take it for walks so hopefully will settle down.

I'm not sure of the breed. It's a cross dog. Very cross and very naughty.

We used to have a cross Labrador/Kelpie. She was a terror as a puppy and all the rest in her litter were shot because their owners couldn't put up with them, but Dad kept on building fence after fence to keep her in and she turned out the best dog you could ever hope for. We were living in the country at the time and lived on the road that entered the footy oval. Anyway, Minlaton were playing Yorketown (which was the biggest rivalry in the then SYPFL) and Dad had spent the whole Saturday adding Lattice work to the already existing fence as this dog could jump over anything and had just finished the job at around the time the footy had finished. He called us out to admire his work with him, but someone left the back door open, and the front door, and the dog ran through the house and got out on to the road with all the oncoming traffic. Very ironic and very funny at the time! She even managed to get out one time and somehow made her way to the school (where me and my sister went and where Mum taught). Mum had to call in relief and me and her dragged the dog back home.

Go on sploosh - get a puppy!

Well, we're back to square one again. We adopted our dog, beautiful and quiet it was, loving and friendly. Perfect. Hmmm... leave it alone for 2 minutes and it became the dog from hell. Truly damon-like, as in posessed. No sleep at all during the night for us, and this morning we tried leaving it at home while we went out briefly. Yikes. Ripped up curtains, and it literally chewed through the corner of the front door as well as the timber support. It was unbelievable. Like 2 completely different dogs. We set a video camera going the second time we left it alone this morning (we only went out for 20 minutes, mind you), and the holwing/chewing/scratching was just like a horror movie. So, we'll be trying again. Once we've fixed up/bought new stuff.

Yeah, terriers dig, all small dogs are active, working dogs can't keep still. Irish Wolfhounds are great - they may be huge but they just lie there hoping you'll trip over them and drop food.

Unfortunately dogs, are pack animals and don't like being alone. If you can't take them with you you need two.

Think you'll find thats all puppies mate ... We recently bought a Bullmastiff and whilst it's an initial shock to the system to be woken during the night here and there (and to have to clean up after him regularly), we've really been quite fortunate ... When we leave him home alone (which is a lot of the time unfortunately at this stage) we just make sure we leave certain doors closed so he can't get to any of the important stuff.

I'd imagine it's an initial growing/teething period you would incur with nearly all puppies, but it also gives you the opportunity to train and raise them in your own manner, and hopefully the rewards down the track will far outweigh any sacrifices made throughout the growth phase.

add eats and its Repco Lad and Gay Akubra from "Kingswood Country" to a T. Fairly typical sight hounds by nature.

Have to agree there. I have a Kelpie cross Staffy and she is the nicest dog you could meet. Such a lovely nature and very loyal.

Anyone in the market for a Dog though i urge you to take a look at the AWL site specifically this link:
