An Australian man has been arrested in North Korea for doing something, and that's likely to be the end of the poor bastard.

Canberra: Consular officials are providing assistance to the family of an Australian man reportedly detained in North Korea.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it is "urgently seeking clarification" after the man was reportedly arrested in Pyongyang.

"Owing to our privacy obligations we will not provide further comment," a spokesperson told AAP on Thursday.

Media reports have identified the man as 29-year-old Alek Sigley, who is studying Korean Literature at Kim Il Sung University and also runs a tour company that organises trips for foreign students.

very unfortunate, but in reality it's probably up there with Baghdad as preferred holiday destinations.

I agree, because it is a bizarre place, but you'd only see what your state-imposed your guides shows you, and you'd be paying through the nose to fund a regime that is morally, politically, and economically bankrupt.

Plus the moment there was a suspicion of you being in the wrong, as our current Aussie detainee and the American student who pinched a poster in his hotel corridor and was tortured and ultimately died found out, you're really in the wrong, and no-one can help you.

At least you'd only need a one way ticket initially, if all goes well then you can buy your return ticket.

Written by a Russian who spent time in the DPRK as an exchange student back in the days of the Soviet Union. Some of the info is a bit old now but it remains the best "balanced" assessment of NK that I've yet read.
