You get given 27, as I did.

I intend to have a Golf Link Handicap by the end of this year though.

Depends on the comp. Some give you the max some don't.

Thanks again for the day Booney, it was much appreciated.

When most blokes take up golf, or those with a little bit of hand/eye, in particular those who have played a bit of sport, usually start around the 30 mark. Boon I reckon you would start about there when you eventually start playing regularly & join a club. The process is you play 3 rounds for handicap. Your 3 scores are combined and a bit of give or take (depending on your home course slope) applied. I am sure Heater has a better feel for this than me. We have a guy who has just taken up the game, in the past few months, who plays in our group on a Saturday. Played plenty of cricket & footy etc... but has realised that the body is past all that now. He was given 27 after putting his cards in, yet to play to it, so he will start to drift out now. He is a fair bit older than you Boon, and I would also imagine yourself Benny. He does however hit them pretty straight, just not very long.
From what I could see Boon, you have the basics, of the game there already, upgrade those sticks, get yourself a fairway wood & a hybrid, you will be a mid 20's player in no time.

Yeah Handicaps are a bit of a complicated process. The best 8 scores from your last 20 rounds are used if you have less than 20 then it is scaled back so it can be inconsistent until you get your 20 cards in.

but a rough guide is if you shot 90 and the Par is 70 you have played to a handicap of 20.

i shoot mid 90s most of the time, but my actual scores would likely be a fair bit higher than that, probabl 3-5 shots, as when we play we never worry about hitting provisionals off the tee in case of OOB for instance - we will usually just drop a ball somewhere down where we thought it went.

if we all stuff our tee shots we sometimes call mulligan and all just hit them again too haha.

then again if i was playing for realsies i probably wouldnt pull out the driver on those 300m par 4s where it certainly isnt required, so i could probably get a stroke or two back there.

so yeah i reckon i would be at least 27 if i played properly

Hit the nail on the head there Benny... it's the penalties etc that in "real" competition golf that the average 5 times a year golfer does not calculate in. It's all well and good to say I won't hit driver here etc.... but then you start taking 3 iron, or hybrid, pull it or cut into into strife anyway. Double bogey, or worse in the blink of an eye. Then there is all the stuff that can go on in your head..... My 9 iron ****'s me to tears. One club that I can hit well, or completely screw, makes no sense, but it gets into your sub conscience. Realsie golf is different, but when you get the hang of it, it's bloody good fun.

Yep. I needed to 2 putt the last hole on Saturday to beat my handicap by 1 shot. 3 putted it..... the game screws with your head. Thank goodness I don't do it for a living!

Certainly....currently play off 15 with no practice, occasional putt before the round and a few swings before tee off. Had 1 lesson about 2 years ago in 6 years of regular golf again.

And then there are the naturals. Played years ago with a young lad, who was a very, very, very good footballer (drafted by Carlton in the 90's) better than handy cricketer. He was playing for his handicap. He swung the club 4 times on the 1st tee as his warm up. Said I would give him 8 just on the practice swings. He eventually got his handicap - started on 9. Within 12 months he was on 5, and in his second season won the club championship. If you're good at sports... you're good at sports. Don't know that he practiced all that much either. Just played regularly.

I'm one round away from putting in my 3rd card, hoping tomorrow or sometime this week.
Works been busy and the Saturday comp is no good at for next month so will play on Sundays hopefully.
I will get a handicap of close to the maximum.

My issue is just my poor consistency on any given shot.

I wish I could memory card all my perfect shots and put them together to see what the result would be.

My 2 cards have been a 94/102 on the par 71.
When playing regular I was around the 88 mark and did get down too 82 on one good day.

Nice one MT... It will be interesting to see what handicap you get given. My understanding is you are handicapped more so on your best score of the 3 rather than an average of the 3 rounds. So lets say you shoot 100 next time out, to give you scores of 94, 100 & 102. My guess is you will get about a 25 handicap. See how far out I am!

Correct, 3 cards submitted for handicapping will use the best score. Submit another 3 and you will get the average of the best 2.

All things are going to plan so far.
Should be out on first tee by 2ish
Tough windy conditions.
This is where I wish I could play grandpa golf and just hit it very low and straight

Play to position. Take the long irons and lay up instead of going for home with a fairway, even long iron off the tee when you're aiming at smaller landing areas....good luck!

At least the greens will be soft! ( If you hit them... ;) )
