2011 Worldwide Golf Thread

Can be used for all players, not just the Australians covered in another thread, and all tournmanents, for those that follow golf.

The Dubai Desert Classic will tee off shortly in the third round, with the big story of round two being Tiger Woods' surge right back into contention. After a patchy -1 in the first round, he roared back into the tournament with a six-under 66 in the second round, to sit four shots behind Rory McIlroy, who is on -11.

Aussie Brett Rumford followed his careful opening round on -3, with a four under round of 68 in the second, but may rue two bogeys on the back nine that cut his run. He sits on -7.

The stage is set for a grandstand finish in this tournament, with two Aussies well placed for a tilt at the 301,000 Euro first prize.

Anders Hansen, Thomas Aiken and Rory McIlroy lead on -8, with the latter +3 today to slip from the outright lead. Brett Rumford is one shot back on -7, with fellow Australian Scott Strange on -5.

Sergio Garcia's double bogey on the final hole sent him back to -7, the same score as Tiger Woods (even par today), Alvaro Quiros (-4 today), and Alvaro Velasco. The latter is a great story, after making the cut by a single stroke, he shot -7 today to surge back into contention.

Alvaro Qurios takes out this tournament in an amazing final round that showcased the absolute best and worst for a player.

After an eagle on the second hole, and birdies on the third and fifth, he opened out to a two stroke lead. On the eighth, he fired the ball into a tree and had to take a triple bogey seven to fall back to one behind the leaders.

On the par three eleventh, however, he shot a hole in one to take the lead back, which he never relinquished, finishing -11.

Aussie Scott Strange finished equal fourth on -9. Brett Rumford just could not get his day moving at any stage, finishing in a tie for 20th on -4.

Blustery opening round in the Honda Classic in Florida, with winds over 30 km/h most of the day and expected to be even more windy tomorrow.

Spencer Levin leads on -3. Aussies Greg Chalmers and Stuart Appleby sit just behind on -2, but only eight players broke par in the opening round. John Senden sits even with the card, Robert Allenby at +1 and Marc Leishman at +2. Adam Scott looks already set to forget about staying for the weekend. His round of +7 included a quintuple bogey eight on the par 3 15th and a double bogey on the par 3 17th.

Of some of the other top names, Lee Westwood is even; Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell +3 and Rickie Fowler at +6.

Kenneth Ferrie went within a whisker of the magical 59 in a round, and becoming the first player in European Tour history to do so, with a European Tour equalling third round of 60 in the Open de AndalucĂa de Golf last night. He made the cut by the barest margin, but now sits second on the leaderboard.

A 60 has not been shot on the Tour (without the benefit of the preferred lie rule) for 40 years.

The US Masters tees off tonight at 10.15, ONE HD will be showing each round live. Should be a cracker of a tournament, particularly with the favorite Phil Mickelson being in very good form this year.

Saw a good playoff the other week where Australasians Craig Hancock, Michael Long and Scott Laycock lost in a four way sudden death play off to emerging 20 year old Korean Kim Bi-o in the Chinese Masters.

Some of the Aussies overseas doing okay in bigger tournaments. Nathan Green fired a seven under second round to move to -9 for the John Deere Classic, five behind leader Chez Reavie, while Cameron Percy also sits at -9 with two to play in his round. World number seven, Jason Day, struggled to get the driver working today, his -2 moving him to -6 overall.

Michael Sim and Rod Pampling should both just make the cut, sitting at -5 and -4 respectively.

The Scottish Open sits at an intriguing stage, with many of the field yet to complete their second rounds after torrential thunderstorms swamped the course. Scots Peter Whitford and Scott Jamieson are equal leaders with former US Open winner Graeme McDowell on -11. Jamieson, a tour rookie, may well rue the 17th hole when he took a double bogey. Until that point, he had been -8 for his round, but that hole pushed his round back to -6.

World number one Luke Donald will resume his round this afternoon, sitting at -2 for the day after nine holes, to be -7 overall.

It would take a good finish for many Australians to make the cut, which looks like -4 at this stage. South Australian Wade Ormsby is -1 after five holes, to be -2 for the tournament. While not Australian, great to see Kiwi Michael Campbell back in the mix at -5 after 11 holes. He has had horror form and injuries for years, but is in a position to press from here.

What about the Scandinavian Masters a couple of weeks ago when Alexander Noren went into the final round with a 12 shot lead and shot one of the days best rounds of 77  to win by 7 shots.

Anderson Hed shot 90 and Steve Webster 91 in the final round where the average score would have been above 80
