Its the rough that scares me

I struggle to see how the amateurs find their ball when a tournament is not on.

Dare say they leave it extra long for the US open, and cut it back down a few notches for the members. Still I get what you are saying. Years ago the Mt Compass course was a bit like that. Miss the fairway & hit another one, you just couldn't find it.

Yet the worldwide problem with amateur golf is the time it takes to complete a round......its course mismanagement like this that kills club golf. Need to balance it so it still catches the ball but not having you searching for 15 minutes in ankle deep grass.

I agree heater. The other thing with the Pros Vs us Hacks, is they have not only marshalls on every hole who can act as forward spotters, but the galleries as well. When you have a rough idea where the ball may be as opposed to no bloody clue it makes the hunt a bit quicker. Had one on the weekend that I smashed way right on the first tee. Just about to give it away, when a bloke in our group says there's one over here. My ball crashed into a tree and was 80-90 meters away from where I was looking. A gallery ahead see that, not us clowns back down the fairway.

Nice one Heater, a good read. Interesting though, the 8 handicapper managed 6 pars. So it's the 12 "others" that did him in. Get the ball in play and you can score. Hit it into trouble, sounds like you stay in trouble. Puts Johnny Millers 63 into context.... when you're having a day....

I may have been incorrect re telecast times. Looks like it will be on foxtel 502 (I think) from about 1am, through to 7am. Will crawl out in the morning, fire up the coffee machine & settle in to catch the closing day 1 action.

seems like if you hit fairways and greens the course isnt that bad, but if you miss there is no scrambling for par, it is instant bogey+

I reckon the scrambling bit is the key..... 72 holes, even the best WILL miss a fairway or two. The bloke who STILL makes par despite the miss, wins.

Weather delay on day one. Many of the field are yet to hit off. Early leader Landry at -3.

Edit- just announced play has been abandoned now for rest of the day.

Thunderstorms have played havoc at the opening round of the 2016 US Open.

Just 9 players were able to complete their rounds, this despite a 2 tee start (1 & 10).

The afternoon tee time players, on day one, did not even get on the course, after 3 separate delays in play. This means that given better weather (which is forecast) that much of the field will need to play 36 holes on day 2 to catch up. This US Open could take a while to play, if we get a playoff we could still be going mid next week. The US Open is the only major on the roster that has a full 18 hole playoff in the event of a tie following 72 holes of regular play.

Current Leaderboard

Andrew Landry -3 (17*)

Bubba Watson -2 (14)

Danny Lee -2 (13)

Scottie Scheffler (a) -1 (F*)

Kevin Streelman -1 (16*)

Lee Westwood -1 (13*)

Harris English -1 (12*)

Notables - Kaymer E (13), Z. Johnson E (11), Spieth +1 (11), McIlroy +4 (13), Fowler +6 (12)

Those who are yet to start include - Garcia, D, Johnson, McDowell, Ogilvy, Els, Cabrera, Scwartzel, Grace, Mickelson, Rose, Day & Oosthuizen

Has a 10 foot birdie putt on his 18th Hole (Started on 10 so it is the ninth) for an opening round 66 the lowest opening round score at a US Open held at Oakmont.

Stuff the morning warm ups on the range get on the practice green which also happens to back onto the 9th green......

This may go some of the way to answering your question Heater...

http://www.chatsports.com/rumors-humor/ ... fner-20489

The scuttle is that Amanda (Boyd) Dufner may have spent some time with a Mr T. Woods, which led to the split. Who knows, but perhaps consider the form line!
