The Open Championship (British Open) 2016

The Open Championship (British Open) 2016

Postby Corona Man » Thu Jun 23, 2016 5:28 pm

The 145th Open Championship – Royal Troon.

Set upon the rugged coastline of the West of Scotland, the historic links of Royal Troon is one of golf’s most challenging venues. Deep rough mixed with gorse and broom combined with an unforgiving prevailing north-westerly wind make the Old Course a true test of golfing skill and ability.

The Open Championship returns to the Old Course for a ninth time in 2016. While minor adjustments have been made to every hole in preparation for the Championship, more significant changes have been made on the 9th, 10th and 15th holes, largely to restore some of their previous characteristics and features.

Many players and officials site their favourite hole at Royal Troon being the postage stamp – par 3 - 8th hole. The green is set in the side of a large sandhill and missing the target – will likely find one of five bunkers which can cause mayhem. In The Open of 1950 German amateur Herman Tissies took 15, but at the age of 71, in 1973 Gene Sarazen became the oldest player to record a major hole-in-one – and sank a bunker shot for a two the following day. Ernie Els aced it last time The Open was played here in 2004.

The Open Championship boasts the largest field of any of the 4 majors, and the most diverse. Players from all around the globe have qualified to be at Troon in July.

History also suggest that winners of the US Open when held at Oakmont, back it up by winning the Open Championship when held at Troon, in the same year. Tommy Armour (1927), Ben Hogan (1953), Jack Nicklaus (1962), Johnny Miller (1973) & Ernie Els (1994) have all completed the double. What chance then Dustin Johnson?

The Open Championship begins on July 14th. The coverage in past years on foxtel has been very good. With full days play being shown, and morning tee off’s coincide with prime time viewing here in Australia.

No markets available yet, will post them when they become available.

I took a gander at this course this time last year absolutely magnificent. Being on the west coast does bring the wind into play. I would not be able to play it with that wind.

First Open without Ivor Robson announcing the players on the 1st tee. Won't be the same!

Looking forward to see how Nick Cullen goes. Doesn't have a tour card outside of Australia. Pulled out of qualifying for the US Open to play an event in Austria in an attempt for a Tour Card there.

Its funny you say that as I only really always keeped an eye out for him because of Dan. I actually thought Dan might've made something of himself.

I'd love to see him make the cut but its unlikely.

Did you ever have a go at Leaderboard Golf on the Commodore64? Used to be able to print out your scorecard at the end of the round.

Matt Jones going really well and hopefully he can keep his score stable through the back 9. Greg Chalmers the Great Man going at under par currently too.
