The Cairns Taipans have now signed their other import in 6'2" PG Markel Starks who played in Italy last season and played his college ball at Georgetown.

Also Melbourne United have completed their roster with the signing of local Igor Hadziomerovic a 6'4" guard who has just finished playing at Boise State University in the US.

Rumoured to be with Perth and not Cairns which is really surprising. Not sure how he could fit in their team structure wise, salary cap wise and points cap wise and he's on big money in Europe too so don't know how much credence this rumour has. But the Boomers are back in Australia now so there might be some face to face discussions.

Hopefully Jawai has a big one on Saturday night!

In Boomers news Damian Martin has come back from Europe with a calf strain and has been ruled out of the series against NZ so has been replaced in the team by Cairns Taipans swingman Cameron Gliddon. With Patty Mills' return along with Dellavedova and Gibson there Martin probably wouldn't have received much game time anyway.

Game 1 Boomers vs NZ is on Saturday night on Gem at 8pm and before that Game 1 of the Opals series against NZ will be shown at 6pm.

Boomers up 34-26 at half-time. Massive crowd at Rod Laver Arena about 16,000.

Looking like our class was starting to come through a bit in the second half of the 2nd quarter.

Great starts by Delly & Bairstow and Patty starting to find his groove a bit now too.

Getting a touch nervous three point game.

Corey Webster is killing us and we're f**king up too much offensively

Final scoreline flattered the Boomers a bit but we'll take that. Means NZ have to win Game 2 by 13 or more to win the series. Crowd was 15,092

Game 1

Australia 71 (Andersen 17, Mills 17, Dellavedova 15) def New Zealand 59 (Webster 22, Kenny 12)

Australia lead the series 1-0

Didn't play great but 12 point victory is a good result. Ingles and Baynes are definitely missed. Other than some cold shooting to begin and a couple of turnovers late, Patty Mills was superb. Just as well he was in the team.

I thought Dave Andersen may have been on the decline after the FIBA World Cup but he came up big again tonight. Been playing for the national team for donkey's years and still producing. One of the best performed Boomers of all time.

Winning in Wellington will be no easy task but hope we can close it out with a win, rather than relying on losing by a lesser margin.

I'm with you Andersen looked like he was on his last legs at the WC last year but he's shown a lot of heart over the years with the Boomers since 2003. Pretty much every single year he's fronted up for the last 12 years. With his service to the Boomers and his play on the Euro tour and in this game he should be locked in for a spot on next year's Olympic team.

Patty Mills is just another level you can clearly see it just comes in cold no preparation, off the bench equal team high 17 points.

Too true, unfortunately he would be contracted until Rio and as BA don't usually like to move too quickly it wouldn't surprise me if they contracted him for another Olympiad after that.

Jeez I sure hope not. Lemanis is the weakest link on the team. I'd just about rather bring back a 62 year old Brian Goorjian from China to coach the Boomers again!

I hope not too but generally they don't like to chop and change from one Olympiad to the other so no doubt Brett Brown would still be coaching the team if he hadn't have stepped down after only 4 years in the job. I think it would take something pretty big for them to even consider it especially after making the job full-time from now on with his appointment, which in turns rules out a lot of people who would only be interested in doing it part-time. I wasn't a huge fan of Goorjian getting the job at least initially but in retrospect compared to Lemanis those were the glory days.

Supposedly the team wasn't a happy camp on this European tour with a few players not enamoured with Lemanis' coaching and then there was obviously the whole Patty Mills situation too so hopefully BA see the error of their ways after Rio.

It was funny watching the stream of one of those games we just played in Lithuania the commentary was in Lithuanian obviously and their pronunciations of some of our guys names were hilarious, Brock Motum was Brockus Motumus, Dante Exum was Dante Exumus but the best was Lemanis he pronounced it Lemon-iss.

It just seemed strangely apt.

Last night the touring Louisiana State University played a very undermanned Sydney Kings team at Sydney Uni Aquatic Centre with the Kings winning 97-95. For the Kings Angus Brandt had 27 points & 13 boards, Steven Markovic scored 17 and Jarrod Weeks 15 and for LSU young Aussie star Ben Simmons had 26 points & 8 assists and Tim Quarterman scored 24.

Unfortunately Channel 9 have decided not to broadcast the feed of Game 2 of the Boomers/NZ series in Wellington tonight. Australia to win the series only need to lose by 11 points or less to qualify for the Rio Olympics next year.

FIBA and BA are going to be streaming the game live on this Youtube channel starting at 5pm (SA time) today:

Missed the game live last night and only just watched the replay and we were more impressive in this game than in Melbourne. Really should've kept that 15-20 point lead for most of the game but knew we had it in the bag. Bogut looked much better in this game 10 points, 10 boards, 3 blocks both he and Jawai played much more aggressively down low.

Game 2

Australia 89 (Dellavedova 14, Andersen 11, Bairstow 10, Bogut 10) def New Zealand 79 (Webster 16, Te Rangi 14, Bartlett 13, Fotu 12)

Australia won the series 2-0

Full replay of the game:

In NBL news the Sydney Kings have signed NBL journeyman Rhys Carter who was a member of the NZ Breakers championship team last season.
